My kitchen is new but i hate it...(pics) what can i do to improve
Comments (37)Dear Polar Princess, I am happy to read of your recent survivorship and a getting new lease on life. I think your oak cabinets look very well made and can be a star with some new accessories. Oak is a timeless, beautiful wood. Here are the changes I would try for minimal cost: 1) As has been mentioned numerous times: remove the stenciling & ivy to freshen the look. 2) If you can easily remove the light bridge over the sink and add molding to the top of the 2 cabinets where it connected, that will also modernize the look, as previous poster suggested, for not much money. 3) Backsplash: Provide Maximum sizzle and splash, which will transform the kitchen with a shimmering glass tile mosaic. See link below as example. Your area is not big, so you could pull this off for only $200 to $250 in materials. 4) Definitely bring in the brown leather bar stools you like or even something very modern in style as a contrast. 5) Counter tops: white laminate is not necessarily bad. In fact, if you add a shimmering glass backsplash that is a nice counterpoint to the white counters, you may find they are now more pleasing to you, without going to the expense of adding granite. You already know how easy to maintain your laminate counters are. You might jazz them up with some interesting place mats or update your centerpiece to be more in keeping with the brown leather & mosaics. 6) Window valence: maybe replace the lace look with something more tailored to complement the new backsplash and stools. 7) Wall paint: See how the backsplash changes the look and decide if you want to add wall color or not. 8) If you still yearn for SS appliances, check into changing out the front panels of the frig and dishwasher with SS. Don't think that is possible with the stove. I would really keep the bisque because they will look nice with the new backsplash as well. The link is from a larger website with many different choices of mosaic color combinations. The featured one is Anima because I think it would complement your while/bisque and oak and brown leather. Also check out several of the Spectralight (with and without El Dorado), Shimmerfly (one is Honey Pearl)and others which might complement your adjacent room colors. Good luck with all your decisions. We celebrate that you are here to make them! Anna Lee F Here is a link that might be useful: Glass tile backsplash...See MoreI regret my granite choice..
Comments (96)Wow, Marshmello, what a beautiful room! (not saying that to dispute your opinion - I loved mdln's response: Posted by mdln (My Page) on Sun, May 18, 14 at 12:09 Tell your mom you are really sorry, it did not turn out as you expected, and she was right. Then ask if there is anything you can do to make up for it. Suspect once everything is done, and you have stuff on the counters, it will not be as noticable. Also, the rooms paint color and lighting can alter how countertops look. Good luck.") This advice in general >> Tell your mom you are really sorry, it did not turn out as you expected, and she was right. Then ask if there is anything you can do to make up for it. can mean so much when delivering an apology. Yet so few people do that / say that....See MoreGranite Fabricator issues, what do I do?!
Comments (8)Post some pics to let us see what you see..... Also - Close in inspection of the work should be done at the time of completion (I KNOW you prolly did NOT want to hear that) - but whenever you get something - you should really inspect it all at the time of receipt - not 30, 60 or 90 days later - Brian has some really valid points, but every effort should be made by the consumer to make sure that they are happy with the product at the time of completion - it's kind of like getting a brand new set of tires on your car, and then coming in after a month because the front tires are wearing unevenly (never mind that the front end on the car needs alignment) = does this make sense? Remember too - that this is natural stone, and that some of what you are seeing is a natural thing that occurs in some species of granites - your fabricator has a duty to inform you of these qualities at the time that you are making your buying decision - not now....... so IF this is something that is in the "this is normal for this species of stone" - he should have told you. Because there is always two sides to the story, and IF he DID tell you - you should have been listening, or he should have made sure thatyou understood this........ Again - I am SURE that what I just said is NOT what you wanted to hear too - and maybe it does not apply to your situation (I do not know) - BUT, I get called in to work as a third party mediator on situations just like this ALL THE TIME, and the "communication" issue (or lack thereof between the fabricator and the customer) is a common thread in the equation. If some of these :knuckleheads that call themselves "Fabricators" would take the time to EDUCATE their customers BEFORE THE WORK STARTS - I'd have a LOT LESS of these "pissing matches" to attend wearing my striped referee's shirt !!! LOL Maybe you were not able to see everything right away, and that's understandable. Maybe the house was a spec, and the work was done months before you moved in - this could be the case too... What fries me on situations like this, is that people have to understand that granite fabricators are not Walmart - you cant expect them to keep coming back every time you see a new scratch or chip - Speaking purely from my own experiences over the last 26/27 years doing granite slab countertops - we QC (Quality Control) ALL of our work, and inspect BEFORE the customer can - we catch a lot of stuff and correct it - BEFORE it goes out the door - this greatly reduces the amount of calls we get like the one you have... because we took the time to go over everything and makes sure that we are delivering MB Quality product - "Das Beste Order Nicht" (the best or nothing!) hth kevin...See MoreI LOVE my new granite!
Comments (35)Thanks for all the compliments--almost 2 weeks later, I love it more every day and I still can't get used to the overall WOW factor every time I enter the room. I selected the backsplash tile this week. It is Walker Zanger Gramercy Park 2x6 subway tile in bone china color. If I recall correctly it is the same tile as mamadadapaige's backsplash (you can do a search to see it in her photos). Apparently this tile is popular with mothers of little girls named Paige! The sink is actually a Rohl Allia fireclay sink. I ordered the sink in white and only discovered it was actually bisque color when they were installing the granite. It turns out that the bisque is exactly the same color as our cabinets, so it was a happy mistake that looks intentional! The white probably would have looked out of place. We didn't specify the layout of the granite. There is a seam down the middle of the sink that is matched so closely that I can't find it unless I feel for it. I love that they were able to include the long gray/mustard river on our 10 foot cabinet run along the half wall. My husband was hoping they would do that, but we didn't specify it. The granite fabricators did a wonderful job. In fact they are the only contractor we've worked with that we would hire again!...See Moregr8daygw
