Hello All,

I'm having a difficult time keeping my dark cherry wooden blinds dusted. The microfiber cloth doesn't seem to work well. Suggestions?

I use a 'moppy' type microfiber duster to dust my wooden blinds. It's made by Bissell to reach high areas, and the dusting portion comes off of the extension rod for dusting lower areas and can be set to any angle you want. It seems to really hold onto the dust instead of just moving it around, and can be removed from the frame and tossed in the washer to clean the 'mop' head. I close the blinds and run it down the front and back, then reverse the closure angle and run it down the front and back - it only takes a minute or two per window that way, Hope this helps!

I use a swiffer duster on mine, the yellow one on with the extension handle....It really does a good job with the dust. I do hand wash my blinds about twice a year. I just take like a mop bucket with warm water and Dawn Dishwashing liquid and use a wash cloth. It gets them really nice and clean with no residue and I have never had cords get stained from washing. It's not like you use it sopping wet... just wring the rag out and after a few slats swish it in the water, wring it out and continue...I just noticed today I need to do the same thing as you....

There is no easy solution. You can try to keep as much of the sand as possible from entering your house (e.g., mats at all entryways), and try to pick up as much as you can with filtration systems, but the stuff is still going to be there. For cleaning dust around windows, I prefer using a vacuum cleaner and the round brush attachment. The ideal solution would be a whole house vacuum sytem. With a whole house system, you move from room to room with the hose and wand, switching between the floor attachment and the round brush for the blinds and window sills. You can do the same with a canister vacuum. One thing that will make the work go faster is not placing furniture in front of the windows. If you have to move anything so that you can get to the window to clean it, you have added significantly to the time you spend cleaning.

Thank you! practigal, DH won't go for aluminum blinds again. Wood or faux wood, yes. Honeycomb shades, yes. But metal blinds: no way. Dang, because yes, they are easily cleaned. Faux wood blinds are supposed to be able to withstand similar conditions, though (won't be harmed by water) so it's the look DH wants and the cleanability I want. (okay, spell check on houzz is subpar. It thinks that I misspelled cleanability. I didn't. It also thinks I misspelled subpar wrong, too. Kinda sad.) oasisowner, I know today's roller shades, especially custom ones, are better than the ones I grew up with but I hated them growing up so I'd have a big ol' mental block to get over first. But it's something to bring up when I meet with my designer on Monday. Benjesbride, I had to Google solar shades? I thought they were the same thing as honeycomb shades but I guess they aren't. Are they fabric? Any idea how well they clean?

My hardwood floors are probably filthy, but look really good. I have them throughout the first floor. I sweep them daily, and run the occasional Swiffer WetJet on the kitchen portion of the floor in front of the sink, dishwasher and stove. I have tried a lot of things when mopping, and found that I prefer to use hot, HOT water and a damp rag mop once a month to get them really clean. I often have to refill the water, as it is black during this cleaning. Should probably do it more often, but I don't have the time.

You're quite welcome! I got mine from Amazon for about $20, and I'm sure lots of other places have it, too. Search for "Bissell Smart Details Microfiber High Reach Duster" - that's the official name of the 'moppy type' duster. :-)

i find i need to use a 'cleaner' of some type when i clean our wood blinds---like pledge. a dry cloth/duster doesn't seem to do it for me either :(

I have a problem dusting mine too. I just remembered that I have a small "California car duster" that I use for inside my car; think I'll try that next.
