granite radioactivity? I know, I know
Comments (24)Al, thanks for the gallows humor! Brightened my morning! ;) I think Mike has made an accurate assessment of the situation. The dangers of radon in the kitchen are hyperbolic, but that's not the issue. The issue is that the fear-mongering is a tangential attack on the potting mixes that incorporate granite. If we keep the topic on target, we quickly realize that there is a very, very, very low (miniscule) risk of radon in a mix. Another point that I'd like to address, and I apologize for not returning to this topic sooner: "No one trusts the tests by the Marble Institute. Its like the cigarette companies saying smoking doesn't cause cancer. I believe I read in Europe, granite must be tested before installing in the home." - Plenty of folks do trust the Marble Institute. Speaking in absolutes is seldom accurate. - In this case, it would be more accurate to say that this is like Cigarette Companies saying that smoking doesn't cause "all" the cancers that are attributed to smoking.... Further, the EPA is a garbage agency. Many, many folks mistrust the EPA and the harms it has caused by enacting policy based on hyperbolic, uncorroborated, and junk science. It is ironic to point the finger at the Marble Institute, while lauding the EPA. Again: Granite chips, in containers, pose an insignificant risk to users. To add: when sifting any ingredients - peat, turface, perlite, quartz, coco, or bark - always use caution to avoid inhaling fine particulate. Practice common sense. Comments (104)We are now veiled in Martie's clouds after a downright cerulean morning. "Weather" is definitely movin' in for tonight/tomorrow. I haven't listened to a forecast closely, but I the worst I expect is MAYBE some heavy snow early on quickly changeing to sleet and then to rain. The makins of a pretty gross day, in all liklihood! But I'll be inside painting so I don't really care that much. Good excuse to play with, cuddle (theraputically beat) a little dog, 'bug. (Do they dock the tails of Bouviers, 'bug?). The stageing held! I put the first coat of ceiling blue on the little part of ceiling over the 1st. floor door to the stairwell. I put the first coat of wall color on the remaining half of the north wall, the entire stairwell, and the remaining part of the east wall. As well as a third coat on the outlet, switch, cable, telephone covers. I've cleaned all the rollers, pans, and brushes. And I'm rewarding myself with a "wicked treat"... Hot Pastrami, with onions, ans swiss cheese. MMM-mmm! Helpmeet is a bit downcast, not having accomplished all he'd hoped; he's showered and headed down to the local eatery for a cold beer, some vittles, and some sports on HDTV. :) Martie, you story reminds me of a guy we used to see on the beach some years ago. He had a Saluki; beautiful dog! The acceleration "off the line" was simply amazing and it reminded me of a Cheetah... you know, how the spine really flexes with each leap. Anyway, that dog went nuts over a frisbee. Guy would throw it, dog would look at him, and run it down once released. Other dogs didn't stand a chance, UNLESS it landed in the water. Truly something to behold doing what he'd been bred to do. Your floral assortment is beautiful and thoughtful. I have a grocery store bouquet that arrived with my box of chocolates... all in pinks, reds. whites. I found some very nice chocolate (dark with a candied, edible flower on it, and milk chocolate cupid from an antique mould) and a humorous card for the helpmeet. Every single Valentine's Day he brings me something. Valentine's Day was Mum's favorite holiday (right up there with Easter; her baskets were a joy to behold). I wonder if Jerri will share some sentimental anecdote about her parents? I found those particularly fun and meaningful (in case you hadn't guessed). Just as I was leaving the garage to clean up the equipment I saw a guy with a dog waving to me. I waved right back and called out to him. His dog is a Labradoodle and he lives a few doors south of our home. He said he sees me all the time with Rex, and would love to stop by when I didn't have my hands full. We have several "new" neighbors and it will be fun to meet one more of them. It's important to know who to call when you need a cup of dog chow or when a dog goes AWOL (absent with out leash). ;) Drema, it's so nice to hear from you. I know you've had a lot on your plate, too. I like the way you've decided to "roll with it". Sometimes the simplest plants offer the most interesting colors... I'm a sucker for foliage, anyway, so anytime it offers up multiple colors I'm impressed. How sweet of you to "take Charlie" and give them a night out... . (another Mum anecdote: she used to take 5-6 yr. olds for an afternoon so a young mother could have some time to herself. She said it was easy to just sit and read stories and chatter for a few hours on a Saturday or Sunday.). More I want to say, but I've forgotten it by now. !...See MoreAffinity Colors:Inspired,Amorous,Slip,Aplomb,Kalamata. Anybody?
Comments (8)I think a mature purple with a warm undertone might be better than a deep cool purple. You don't want it looking too "Prince's love nest circa 1985". Especially if it's paired with geometric patterns, modern bedroom furniture, or black and white tones throughout. 20 is definitely young enough to be a little bit girly with a dash of whimsy:) Not sure what her decor/furniture is like, but what about a lavender/lilac Or soft periwinkle purple on the walls with a silvery comforter and sheets with eclectic assortment of purple and silver throw pillows? Crystal bedside lamps (TJ Maxx always has a supes good selection) and an adorable crystal chandy. Maybe a purple rug or get funky and do a black/white zebra rug...very Horchow and looks fantastic with crystal and purple. This look usually works better with furniture with softer lines. Do a search on Horchow for turquoise sofa... They have a pic where they show a turquoise sofa and zebra rug in a room painted a periwinkle It sounds like it should clash horribly, but it looks fantastic. I would post pic, but I'm using my darn iPad right now....See MoreAnybody know what this is?
Comments (42)That sounds good Libby. I'd like to see your begonias in more detail. I don't know where you posted your Adenium photos. I only visit 3 forums on GW. Please provide links if you want people to see what you posted. Here are a couple of photos of some big Adenium in Thailand - they love them over there. The statues are probably 6 to 7 feet tall to give you some idea of scale. This was the Chinese museum that was a gift from China in Pattaya (July 2006) Our second trip June 2015 we visited Nong Nooch garden for the second time and saw a lot more we missed the first time (or was not installed our first time) The potted plants on the right side of the road are mostly Adenium.
