Question for wood stove users

Basically, my question is this: Do you leave your stove burning when you're out of the house?

When we used our woodstove years ago, it was burning all the time. But my DH worked at home, and I was home with the kids. Although there were times when we all left the house together, I don't remember what we did about the stove.

These days, living alone as I am, I'm very cautious about fire risk. I've been letting the fire burn down in the evening, and although I start another in the morning, it's pretty small by the time I leave for work in the afternoon. This week, with single-digit (and below) temps, I'd like to keep more of a fire going while I'm at work, to maintain enough warmth to minimize oil burner use.

Can you tell me the safety parameters?

Thanks!

Susan
