do you haven corner cabinets with lazy susans?

In my old kitchen I had a pantry cabinet and never used it for food, just pot and pan storage. My new kitchen doesn't have a pantry. I like having my stuff in cabinets on either side of the stove. It's much more convenient I think.

I do have a corner lazy susan.. I suppose I could use that and the cabinet between the fridge and stove.. I also have an angles cabinet closest to where the table will go.. It is very narrow, so i might use that for kids snacks- easy for them to get to w/out them making a mess of all the other food in cabinets.. Do you think that will be enough?

You'll figure it out! Before this house I'd never had a separate pantry, and in this one the pantry was too inconvenient to use for food. It's really no problem, since you said you have space.

Easy part: Light things go high. Crackers, cereal (unless you want it at kid height) pasta etc. Heavy staples go either bottom shelf of upper or top of lower: flour, sugar. Cans and glass bottles are best low because they're easier to see and don't bonk you on the head. Bread should also go in the middle, if it's in the pantry, because that's the least amount of squeezing.

Is there a spare cupboard near the table? If so, that's a great place for consume at table things like bread, cereal and cookies. If there's a shelf by the stove or instant hot, or whatever, for teas, instant cocoa, etc., commonly used spices (if you don't have a built-in for them), wine and oil to cook with, and things like that.

In other words, spread some things out to point of use.

You can't plan everything! And if you need to, you'll move a few things out of the kitchen. Things like the stockpot and roaster take up a lot of room, and most people only use them every now and then. It's okay. You'll figure it out.

If you have a Container Store, or other storage/organizer store you can find all kinds of little shelves and stands to put in the cabinets to help organize your storage. I only recently got a pantry so these organizers really help. Many people prefer cabinet storage over pantries because you can put things at point of use.

Good advice so far...I'll tell you what I did....

Kid snacks and cereal...in a buffet neart the nook table (where they are supposed to eat snacks.

Bread, tea, cocoa, coffee, and MW popcorn/easy mac...near the MW, toaster, coffee area (where the old cabinet pantry was).

Things like flour/sugar, pasta, rice, can goods and extra snacks (on high shelves) near my prep area (between the cooktop and sink).

Potatoes, Onions, garlic , In baskets, in open base cabinet shelves near the sink.

Hope that gives you some ideas where you can put stuff.

That's what I'm driving myself crazy about! How in the world can you know next week what kind of food you will have in the house, much less plan for it? Nonetheless, I just made a list yesterday to see what kind of food we currently have in the house, how much space it takes up, and where it will all go, because I had a feeling I'd better make sure I have space for everything I want to be in the kitchen. But that's the kind of thinking that leads to breakdowns! I will relax some about it with that permission.

gilly, I hope you can too; it looks like you will have plenty of space. The one thing I did decide was that anything the kids will access without me will go as far on the periphery as possible, next to the fridge if I can. Other than that, all I know is I do have the space, and I'll decide that when I get my kitchen.

Thanks for all of the suggestions (and relaxation suggestions!!) I think i am going to ask the cabinet guys to removed the fixed shelf next to the fridge and put in 2 pull out drawers so it will create a little more space. I don't know if they will do it (well, i;;m sure for a fee they will do anything) b/c i think that is where i am going to put the bulk of my stuff. I just found out that we passed inspection for the house and hopefully obtaining our certificate of occupancy tomorrow.. so we should be able to close by Monday (my hubby will be in CA for the week so I am doing the closing by myself IYIKES). but I am super excited and can't wait to show you finished pictures!

I don't know if it's a regional thing but we eat differently in the winter than we do in the summer. I "sort" of have a plan for which wall things will go on but after I've used it a while I'll know better where things work. I'll be changing the footprint of my kitchen so it's a whole new ballgame for me. On paper, it looks like I have twice as much storage space as I need. I know that in reality it probably will be full the day I move in.

I'm lovin that precious little face sticking out from behind the counter! Definitely plan for some low pullouts for snacks to accomodate the little ones.

You are right remodelfla.. I went over to the house again tonight with my girls and figured out where"their" snacks would go.. Now if only i could figure out my lighting situation... arrggghhhh!!! (and closing on the house would be nice too.. but with all the new regulations I will be lucky if we close before Feb. even though the builder received the certificate of occupancy today... another ARRRGGGHHH!!!)

Gilly...Poor planning is when you've already moved in and have everything sitting on top of the island and haven't done any bit of pre-preparation! You, on the other hand, are planning :) That makes you ahead of the curve.

One other thing--punt those heavy rarely used things to the garage or another part of the house if you need to. It's amazing to me how rarely I get out the juicer or the bread maker. However, anything you DO use, even if it's a juicer or bread maker, make room for.

Did you see the posts of the cans in drawers? One of the more recent ones today had some pics of someone who had all their cans sideways in short pull-outs. They were visible and totally accessible. Liked those!
