Miele/LG Steam/Whirlpool Duet Steam ?
Comments (23)My thoughts? First - what do you want and need in a washing machine besides a strong assurance of low vibration? Do you need any special cycles? Do you often like to do hot washes? Etc, etc... A machine that may not do the wash cycles you desire, but has low vibration is just a different set of trade-offs from accepting some vibration but doing the wash as you desire. Getting the wash done to your requirements should be the primary requirement and then look for the lowest vibration. You have a second floor laundry room. With this type of setup the big questions for a HE machine are: 1) How quickly can you get hot water to the machine? 2) How hot is the water from your DHW source? Since the Samsung will only use it's internal heater when doing a sanitary cycle, the answers to the above two questions will really determine what the machine can do temperature wise. Our 2nd floor laundry room has a dedicated, insulated PEX hot feed directly from the DHW tank. I checked the other day and the hose fittings felt hot within 10 seconds of the start of flow so it's getting the hot water very quickly. With our DHW set at 131F, a hot fill at the machine was still only about 110F. The SS drum and clothing suck up a lot of energy. In a machine whose internal heater only operates in sanitary, that would be the best we could do for a hot wash. With less optimal piping, it wouldn't even be this good. If we set our DHW source to 140F, I'd guess we could get a ~115F fill. Some people don't care about, or never do hot washes. If that's the case, the Samsung or any machine with no/limited internal heater would work fine. Anyways, just a consideration thats very important to me. FYI - Whirlpool and many LG's (certainly their top of the line) will use their internal heater in a number of cycles (but not all) besides sanitary. Samsung's answer to this would be their silver care stuff. Believing in this vs. actual hotter temperatures is a leap of faith. Also have to consider the environmental and unknown nano health issues of the "Ag" approach....See MoreWhirlpool non-steam washer with steam dryer, opinions please..
Comments (7)CR's reliability chart shows the percentage of each brand that "needed a repair or had a serious problem." Let's look at two hypothetical brands, "Brand A" and "Brand B". 12% of Brand A's machines suffer from a drain pump failure. Definitely serious, but if it's fixed promptly, and the replacement pump doesn't fail, you get over it. On the other hand, 12% of Brand B's machines suffer from an "unfixable" problem, such as: 1) Frequently takes an unreasonable amount of time to spin, or fails to spin; 2) Damages the clothes in some way; 3) Failure of a component whose replacement costs as much as a new machine. Brand A and Brand B will look equally reliable on CR's chart. Which one would you rather buy?...See MoreWhirlpool duet WED9600TA0 steam dryer
Comments (1)I don't have that model dryer ... but setting the dryness level would NOT be involved on the Timed Dry cycle, so it's logical that the associated lights would not be functional. The damp dry signal probably falls into the same situation. You do understand the difference between Time Dry and Sensor Dry, yes? Auto Dry or Sensor Dry or whatever the cycles are called on your machine ... the operator sets the target dryness level of the clothes, typically on a range of five choices from Damp or Less Dry to Very Dry, and the machine automatically determines how long to run via moisture-sensing contact bars in the drum to monitor when the clothes reach that level of dryness. The cycle time varies per the related factors such as how large is the load, fabric type/thickness, dryer temp setting, and how much water was extracted on faster or slower spin speed in the washer. The Damp Dry signal would be an option because the intent of the Auto Dry cycle is to *dry* the clothes ... so if you purposely wanted to remove particular items for ironing while they're still damp, you'd need to know when the load reaches the "damp" level of dryness. Timed Dry, you, the operator, sets the cycle time in minutes and the machine runs for that length of time regardless of how dry are the clothes. The Damp Dry signal would probably *not* be an available option on the timed cycle, because if you expressly wanted the load to be damp, you'd set an appropriate shorter time such 10 or 15 or 20 mins. Why not try using the Auto Dry or Sensor Dry cycles and see if the dryness level and damp dry lights do work then?...See MoreWhirlpool Duet Issues...
Comments (32)I am having mold/mildew/odor problems with my FL whirlpool duet! I have followed mfg instructions...clean regularly, use bleach, only use HE detergent (Tide liquid), never used fabric softners, leave door open and I still have issues. My machine is 3 years old..and is now creating health issues for my family as we are all being treated for mold allergies. When I called Whirlpool with my concerns they emailed me updated cleaning instructions to remove/prevent odors and sent me a complimentary package of the AFFRESH product. The product directions indicate to use 1 tablet per month in a HOT WATER/NORMAL CYCLE; if your machine has significant build up it recommends using all 3 tablets at once. I did this with no significant results. In addition I ran 2 HOT water/BLEACH cycles with no success. The mold/mildew still remain and the odor returned within 24 hours. Whirlpool states that the more frequently you machine is used, the more maintenance that will be required. I do about 3-4 loads of laundry/day. They recommend that run a bleach cycle at the end of every day and dry all components of the washer at the end of every day. I do not have to do this for my dishwasher. It's like telling someone that they have to wash/dry their car every day before driving it the next. I am a very meticulous house cleaner and feel that these daily maintence routines are absurd for a "high" performance machine that is costly. I am still attempting to get this issue resovlved through Whirlpool. In the interim I have logged complaints with the Consumer Product Safety Commmission (cpsc.gov); the state attorney generals office and am seeking legal advice. I encourage others to do the same. Whirlpool knows that these issues are serious and yet do not seem to be proactive in protecting the safety of their consumers....See Moreciao4now
