I haven't viewed the Oprah thing, but dispelling family secrets was something that helped a lot of adoptees and birthparents I know.
For some people this is a generational thing -- the 'shame' -- *whatEVER*!
My DH was his mother's third son in six years, born during the Depression. She was 20, separated from the father of the first two boys. DH's father was estranged from his wife and father of one son. DH's parents married three years later. They raised her two sons had two daughters together.
DH, the middle of his mother's five children, was given up for adoption as an infant. When he found his mother, her shame prevented her from meeting him. In her words, "How could I tell my granddaughters?"
DH was acknowleged by his eldest brother. For him, discovering the existence of this 'missing' child solved a lot of destructive 'family secrets'. For my DH, the discovery of his adoption explained many of the peculiar attitudes within his adoptive family. It was remarkable that he and his father were both newspapermen. None of the others had that interest.
My dh has a half brother who doesn't know -- their dad divorced his first wife, married my dh's mom then divorced her before his birth and returned to first wife. Then they had a baby boy. There are now only about 4-5 people who know, one is the sister [dh's aunt] of the dad. That family has almost always lived out west & now the half-brother lives in Fl. H-B parents never told him and have since passed on. So the aunt hasn't either. A couple of family members think he should know, but auntie has said [and we agree] why tell him something that will only cause hurt feelings [now I do suspect that had some sort of medical need arisen, the secret might have come out].
Oprah big promotional secret being disclosed as of ......
She better pull out a few more big "drama secrets" out of her bag better than this. I mean what family doesn't have a few secrets, duh!! Family secrets are such a bore, bore, bore. Most people could care less, with the exception of very bored people. LOL Oprah's programing deserves a nite(Yawn), nite. This was just a programming come on...Makes me wonder if she is hurting for ratings.
The 'miracle' of the situation is that the half sister did not exploit the fact that she was related to Oprah. Very few people would have stayed quiet for as long as she did.
It is also very surprising that the half sister is on her Mother's side, as opposed to being on her Father's side.
From the link below: "She said Patricia had known since 2007 that the two were related, but never attempted to profit off her discovery or contact the press, even as she tried unsuccessfully to contact Winfrey, her mother or others in Winfrey's family."
