Cree recessed lights mixed with other lighting
Comments (14)If you're using a bulb, a 5" can has a smaller aperture which means that less light escapes (from the can) and the cone of light could be more pronounced. 6" cans are more readily available and are easier to service. This is important for recessed CFL housing with an integrated ballast. Although the integrated ballast could have a longer lifespan than the electronic ballasts on screw on CFL bulbs, they do fail. Replacing the ballast would require access to the top side of the can to reach the compartment. If the housing needs to be dismantled from below, a larger opening would be appreciated. Generally, the smaller the aperture, the higher the cost of the housing and trim. The Cree CR6 lamps will not fit inside a 5" can. However, some designers prefer having smaller openings. If cost is not an issue, why not use a CR4 type lamp in a 4" housing? When looking at recessed lighting, it is easy to fixate on the cost of a particular part/ item and loose sight of the total cost (upfront, operating, maintenance costs). The typical setup should be broken down into 1. The recessed housing. 2. Trim piece. 3. Bulb, discrete ballast (for some CFLs)....See Morecree lr6 vs lr4
Comments (2)The LR4 according to the specifications is somewhat dimmer. In reality, it would be hard to distinguish using the human eye since there will be a number of recessed can lights (all of the same type) that will be used in unison. If you are able to have 2 identical rooms side by side with the same number of lights, the difference could be noticeable. With regards to the diagrams, the scale on the left is the max output. The degrees represented (counter-clockwise) from the bottom is the viewing location. 0- looking straight at the LED 90 - looking at the side of the LED The LR4 has a narrower angle since the LEDs are more recessed than the LR6....See MoreComparing CR6 vs LR6
Comments (9)We tried both the CR6 and LR6 lights in our house. Except for some high-powered LR6-1000 in a room with high ceilings, we greatly prefer the CR6 lights. First, our electrician had a nightmare fooling with the dimmers on the LR6 lights, even following the list of recommended dimmers from Cree. Second, I really like the built-in trim on the CR6 lights. Third, the CR6 dims low MUCH BETTER than the LR6s -- if this was the only difference it would be enough to choose the CR6. I can't emphasize enough how important this was for us, especially in the dining room and the kitchen. Last, the CR6 is cheaper. It lasts 50,000 hours just like the LR6 if you buy it from Cree. The Home Depot version lasts 30,000 hours. So, I suggest you stay away from the LR6 lights, but if you're not sure, buy some of each and compare them yourself with dimmers attached. Comments (3)I'm installing four Cree CR6 lights in my kitchen. Two are installed over countertops and are 7' apart. In the middle of the 7' is my stove, which if needed I can use the microwave light overhead, so I didn't consider adding a third light there. The other two are located over the peninsula and are about 3' apart. I don't think three lights in 8' is too much, but it might not be necessary. Cree makes 4' can lights, but they're really expensive (more than twice as expensive as the Cree CR6), so I went with 2 4" CFLs over my sink. I didn't want halogen because of the heat they generate (I'm in Arizona). Since I"ll use the over-sink lighting mostly when washing dishes or food prep, it didn't concern me too much that they're not dimmable. Here's a link about LED options where I bought my lights. Good luck! Here is a link that might be useful: LED Recessed Lighting Guide...See MoreRelated Professionals
