LED recessed cans guide for kitchen ...
Comments (150)Davidtay, I did look at the link and try hard to find stores that have these bulbs but I could not. I will call Cree today and the phone number they give for Cree Sales Residential. I just measured the room that needs recessed lights and without the two foyer areas and not counting the connecting dining room that has a half a wall high and a half a wall long separating the home office (which is the living room) my room is 17' 8" long X 12' 2" wide. My kitchen has 6 recessed light in there that are supposed to be 900 Lumen's and it is not bright enough for me unless I put the 7th light on the sink on and that room is 14' long X 10' wide. I think I may need more than 6 recessed lights? My kitchen lights have very pretty color (Halogen Reveal but I should have went with the GE Halogen bulbs as the radius of light is not that wide on my bulbs creating areas with no light. The ceilings are 8 feet in these rooms that I am putting the recessed lights in. Maybe 800 Lumen's from a CR6 is better use of lumen's than the 900 lumen's from the Halogen bulb in my kitchen? Maybe 2,700K LED is a whiter cleaner light than Incandescent bulbs that are too yellow to me? I like the 90 CRI of the CREE. Philip's has LED bulbs with higher lumen's and more of the 3,000L I want but the CRI is 82 and they are bulbs they go in a can while I seem to like the one piece look of the CREE. Thank you Davidtay again for always helping us....See MoreSize of 4-inch cree LR4 ceiling lights opening
Comments (7)I live in Canada, but the last time I lead a seminar in California, the Title 24 requirement for wattage was only applicable in the kitchen area, where 50% of the total wattage used had to be flourescent or LED. All other ares in the house only required a dimmer or motion sensor. This may have changed, I'm not sure. You didn't mention that type of room you were lighting. Vaulted ceilings usually accept 4" low voltage gimbal trims or 75PAR30 sloped ceiling downlights. Do some more research. LED 's are certainly not the answer to many special applications in the home....See MoreHow far from the wall (or cabinet) to place my recessed LEDs?
Comments (7)How tall is your ceiling? What size recessed lights do you want to use and at what spacing? Those all factor in. Our old layout had the lights centered on the counter's edge. For our new layout, I moved them out to 1 ft from the counter's edge (3 ft from the wall). We are using 6" cans spaced 4ft apart and have 9 ft ceilings. We are using the Cree CR6 bulbs (Ecosmart brand). We don't seem to have shadow problems, but counters are not in until Tuesday. You may need to be flexible in placement. Once I tore into our ceiling, I found all sorts of obstacles (joists, pipes, vent ducts, and cross braces). That changed the layout a bit. I had to wedge one light into an area bordered on 3 sides by 2 pipes and a joist....See MoreCree LR6 DR 1000 Experience
Comments (9)We put 6 "CREE LED cans throughout the house. I absolutely love them. They are really very bright. Make sure you get the color spectrum that you prefer as there are, I believe, two different spectrums. As far as dimming them goes, unless the technology is much enhanced in the past two years, I wouldn't count on using the dimmer much - the light is just odd when they are dimmed. Instead, I would recommend breaking them up to different switches so you can "dim" the light by switching someoff if the dimmer function isn't quite what you want. In our 12ish by 14ish kitchen I have: 2 over the sink - rarely ever used, 7 in the kitchen, 4 between the kitchen and great room and another 8 in the family room/great room (may be about 24 x14ish). With all the lights on you could land a jet. Seriously, it is a lot of light, but it is easy to adjust since I have 4 zones. I could have done without the light over the sink, but I was tired of a dark kitchen, (had fluorescent tubes before with one incandescent over the sink - DARK). In the kid's rooms we have 4 CreeLEDs- very bright - I wish I had them on two different switches so you could turn on only two at a time. The dimmer function bothers both kids. There can be a slight flickering if the light switch is not set exactly. Love our Crees - expensive, but in two years haven't changed a bulb and have good energy savings. Also, try posting on the lighting forum as they have a ton of good information to share. Also, think carefully where you want your switches. I think I would use the over sink Crees if the switch were handy....See Morelucypwd
