Anyone been to Tybee Island Georgia?

I'm thinking of staying there a night or two in April on our little vacation. I've been looking at some cottages since the motels seem to be much more expensive...or so I thought. When I put the info of which days I wanted to see the total cost, they added the cost of a 3rd night to the price. I e-mailed to ask why. Not sure as there is no listing about that being a particularly special weekend. Nothing going on.

Anyway, just wondering if anyone has been there and how you liked it. Where did you stay?

Are you, by any chance, looking at the third full week or the last full week of April? If so, that is the week before and week of Easter - and there is also a big golf tournament in Savannah during that time. Lots of families with children have that week off and demand is strong for accomodations. That may be why there is time added (minimum stay)

Spring break, too. I haven't been there for years but it was beautiful and the seafood is outstanding. (Hoping you'll be able to have solid foods by then.)

Part B: biggest impression. Papua New Guinea sort of blew my mind. It's said to be a country of 850 languages, and many people still paint their faces, wear feathers and otherwise express their tribal lives. We went to scuba dive, but the people were far more fascinating than the fish life (which was also excellent). I also saw my first WWII Japanese caves and a spewing volcano over the town of Rabaul, which had recently been all but obliterated by an eruption. The airport was abandoned after being covered by 12 feet of ash. The volcano was still spewing ash a couple of times every day, so there was a lot of sweeping. I'd go back in a minute. Fiji stands out too, in part because I went as a solo traveler so met a lot of people. Some very nice Fijians helped me navigate the overland transportation system, and my two favorite legs were taking a local transport truck with a one-eyed market farmer named Mary, and accepting a ride from a truck driver who pointed out all of his family landmarks, including his graveyard of generations My favorite spot was perhaps the island of Ovalau with its town of Levuka, once the country's capital, now a bit of a backwater with the oldest hotel in the country (in which I stayed for about $15 a night--this was about 4 years ago). It was also a couple of weeks before a coup, so there was lots of excitement in the air. And it was incredibly beautiful. Speaking of excitement. Greece was a long time ago, and a great trip. We were in our 20s. On the way back, we wondered why there were so many men with guns in the airports, and why they were checking our passports over and over again--it turns out the plane before ours was hijacked in one of the more notorious hijackings of the 1980s. We always wondered if it would have been us had the terrorists stopped for coffee. Bali was amazing too, and we chartered a (cheap) boat to take us around the Komodo islands for a few days of scuba diving. We slept on deck, and I've never seen so many stars. I'm sort of hot to see more of Indonesia, even though it's largely one of those places where, as a woman, the men won't talk to you if they don't have to (Bali is the exception). Stateside, I have a thing for New Orleans, but I can understand anyone's love for California or any of the other coastal places. Maybe too much information...but you asked!

Hey ya'll. I live in Thomasville, about 15 miles from the FL line and about 30 miles from Tallahassee. Born and raised here and except for college never stayed away. Over here we are surrounded by plantations that have fabulous gardens and pines. The house I live in now backs up to Millpond Plantation and used to be a part of it. I started growing orchids a few years ago and have so many my greenhouse is full! I think FoxesEarth gave some pretty great ideas for growing in this area. There's also lots of things that grow further down that will grow here except they die back in the winter. I even grow supposed annuals such as begonias and impatiens that come back every year with mulch. I also like Lemon Verbena and Greek Myrtle. I just got Dirrs new book Trees and Shrubs for Warm Climates and it gave me a few ideas but the one I can't live without is Southern Living's Garden Book. Pine straw is the best mulch anywhere around and there's plenty of it in these parts. I am always willing to try things that aren't supposed to grow here and have been successful with several things. My landscaper almost died when she saw my hellebores and lilac! I also like to grow herbs and there is a great herb farm in Madison, Florida which is not too far from Valdosta. It's called O'Tooles. The only things I really wish I could grow is English lavender and a hemlock. Sigh. So I settled for a raised bed of different lavender and a Deodar Cedar. Guess you can't have it all! Hope we can play off each other quite a bit. I love new ideas since mine don't always work!

Welcome to the Savannah area. I have been here since 1997 and I'm still learning what I can and can't plant. My rule is try it twice and if not successful then forget it. I have not had good luck with lavender. One spring I put some in a pot and mulched the top with pea gravel...that lasted through two summers and then died. Most doesn't make it through a season for me. So in lieu of lavender I now grow rosemary. Not the same wonderful scent but far more successful to grow. I grow day lilies, hostas, gardenias, cannas, hydrangeas, ferns, begonias and coleus. I find that things root so easily here that there is really no reason to purchase more than one of anything. The city of Savannah does spray for mosquitos. My husband sprays for the roaches once a month. We paid an exterminator to do it for a while, but once around the baseboards and the outside of the house once a month takes care of the majority of them. We get the stuff in a gallon spray bottle at the big box stores. I find that they tend to come in more when it is raining. I hope you have good luck with your tomatoes. I have not been successful, in part, I think because our yard is too shady. Maybe the heirloom varities will do better. I know they taste better..went to a tomato tasting at a nursery in north Georgia a couple of years ago who grew only heirloom varities...yum they were so good. Sadly the nursery has now gone out of business. Hester and Zipperer is a good nursery, I get a lot of stuff in the spring and through the summer at Davis produce on highway 80 East. There are several other wonderful nurseries in the area. I especially like Four Seasons on 204 near I-95 and Secret Garden is good too. Good luck and happy gardening!

I have had a lot of dealings with SSL. There is also a very old post somewhere here on gardenweb about SSL. SSL was founded by Dr. Bill Rhoads an Avid heirloom seedsman. It has always been a one man show with limited resources. What started out as a research projesct with a grant to collect seeds and memories of southern appalachia turned into Southern Legacy Seeds. The best asset for me was the annual Seed swap. Some of the best Appalachian seedsman showed to trade stories and seeds. I was named Seed saver of the year several years ago thru SSL and will always cherish that honor. Dr. Rhoads passed away rather quickly after being diagnosed with cancer March of 2010. Jim Veteto a former student and administrator of SSL completed his Doctorial degree in Anthropology and had hope to stay in the SouthEast but was offered a Job in Texas. Since he helped run SSL in the past it was a perfect match for him to carry on SSl after Dr. Rhoads. So SSL is alive and well but in Tex. There will no longer be a Ga. Seed swap but Jim states the seed swap will contine. I believe they have various levels for donations to support this nonprofit seed bank. And for the donation you have access to the many seeds that are maintained. I know they list everything that has been donated many of the items from myself , but not all are always in sufficent supply to give out. The only catch for access to the seed bank is that you grow out the seed keep 1/3 for yourself return 1/3 to the seed bank and PASS along to others the other 1/3. Please remember that when you request seed that it needs to be grown to maintain purity so that the next person also receives the same seed not some crossed mess. If you just want some unuasual vegetable there are plenty of commercial resources out there. If your intersted in Heirloom Varieties that are non commercial then Seed savers Exchange is a great organization an resource. Or give me your wants I have hundreds of varieties of beans and other rare heirlooms that I will share for the cost set forth by Seed Savers Exchange. If you want to help a grass roots movement that banks southern Appalachian seeds then I would recommend Southern Legacy Seeds.Rodger

Hi Kathleen, it's good to see you posting after your recent surgery and I'm glad to hear how well you're doing.

As mentioned by other KTer's, April is prime time for spring vacation, particularly on the beaches in the south. Also, I've found that cottage rentals usually have a three day minimum and even many large hotels/motels.

I haven't been to Tybee in quite a few years but I always enjoyed it there. It's a fairly laid back beach lifestyle and we always found great food and entertainment.

I was there 4 years ago this coming spring. It's very pretty. Went there for a cocktail party, and we stayed 3 nights in a Hilton Garden Inn outside of Savannah.

Have thought I'd love to go to Tybee Island and rent a place.

I was there last March with a friend. We stayed on Tybee Island and toured Savannah during the day. We had a great trip.. LOVED it!

Thanks for the replies but even after they took off the pet fee ($100) and insurance (about $30 something) it was over $400 for two nights. That was their minimum stay. It's a cute place and we may go some other time. I think this trip we will just make a one day trip to Cocoa Beach instead. We have 2 free days while staying in the Disney area. It's only a little over an hour drive away.

I haven't been to Tybee in years and don't remember where we stayed. I prefer Jekyll Island but it's not that close to Savannah. I live in Georgia but I'm not a big fan of the Georgia coast. I'd rather spend my time on the Gulf of Mexico. Much nicer beaches.

If you want something a little different, do a search for Cumberland Island. It's off the GA coast and it takes a 45 minute boat ride to get there. The boat stops at two locations. One will take you to the beach (after about a 1/2 mile or more walk) and the other to see the ruins of a mansion once owned by (I think) the DuPont family. That may be the wrong name. The island is mostly uninhabited and you need to take lunch and plenty of water with you because there's no food/drink for sale unless you're staying at the one little B&B type place. I prefer the beach myself. Miles and miles of beautiful sand and hardly any people. There are wild horses that roam the island. Frankly, they scared me to death, but they don't bother you and you are warned NOT to bother them. They are really wild. It's just a a beautiful place to spend a day. I've been there 3 or 4 times and am blown away every time by the beauty of nature.

Not sure how the weather would be the first part of April, though.

The first full week of April is the Masters Golf Tournament in Augusta. It gets so crowded there that they close school for the week for spring break. It could be spilllover from the jacking the price up.

We used to go to Jekyll Island with my parents who retired and moved to Georgia. Thomas Edison had a home there--it has an interesting history. There's one mansion and I don't remember how many rooms it had, but it had NO kitchen! No there's a smart lady :-)

Cumberland Island is beautiful, Susan. It may be a little too much so soon after your surgery though, Kathleen.

I was at Tybee for spring break once. What a mess..it is a beautiful place though.
Cocoa beach - when we were there, I put money in the meter and came back 15 minutes early and had a ticket. I raised heck and they told me to take it to the courthouse and complain. The whole room was full of people doing the same thing. They retracted the ticket. Nice little income they get from people who don't...
That is the only thing I remember about Cocoa beach. I don't know what vacation towns think sometimes. Never went back there.

I was just going to add that my aquatics instructor and her family and two other families went there this summer.

They rented a house close to the beach. She said they really enjoyed it but without having the others to divide the expenses they would never have been able to go.

They decided to go there due to all the beaches being closed along the Gulf.

We stayed at a B&B on Tybee Island one night. I wasn't impressed with the beach or the B&B. You will love the beaches in Florida much more but that also depends on the timeframe you are going. Cocoa Beach is beautiful - the public beach at the end of the main highway in and AIA is very nice but it will be crowded if it is around spring break. If you have time, you might try Anna Maria Island in Bradenton area on the west coast. Several nice beaches there.
