I already set the Tivo to record it and hopefully this version will be better than the one with Gwyneth Paltrow. I think Emma is a tough character to get right, but the reviews for this one have pretty good.

Thanks for the info. I will record it. Yes, I will definitely watch it. I love the PBS period pieces. I am currently knitting helmet liners for our military in the Middle East, so it is nice to have something to watch while I keep my hands busy. Plan to con tinue knitting helmet liners through the Winter Olympics too.

I just checked the schedule and Masterpiece Classics will be showing two other Jane Austen titles:

Northanger Abbey- Feb. 14 (1 show, 90 minutes)
Persuasion - Feb. 21 (1 show, 90 minutes)

Probably. Our book club has done several of her books, but I haven't read this one, so it'll be easy to just watch it!

Yesterday we finally finished "Cranford". I had enjoyed *reading* Elizabeth Gaskell -- and Catherine Cookson. They're of generally the same era. We've also seen dramatizations of Cookson's works on DVD. Like Austen, characters are well developed and ring as true to life today as in their period settings.

I won't miss it. I have the TIVO set up for all the Masterpiece Theater shows. I do so enjoy English actors. They always seem so well trained and they bring their roles to life.

I'm thoroughly enjoying this version. I have such a fondness for these period pieces - the wonderful costumes, the charming little villages, the magnificent homes and furnishings, the horse drawn carriages.... This one is particularly well done. Even though I've read the book several times and seen other versions it's great fun to watch the drama play out. It's also a little easier on the eyes- the costumes and hairstyles are very becoming, they appeal to the modern eye better than the authentic period ones do.

Yes, I watched the first two hours and have enjoyed it. Look forward to next weekend.

I liked it too. The actress who plays Emma is exactly right: both completely annoying and charming at the same time. Mr. Woodhouse is great, too, as is the smirking Mr. Elton. And Knightly is--well, knightly!

Would you believe we are starting a DVD of the first episodes of "The Sopranos"? Quite a contrast, eh? We must be the only people in the world who never watched this series -- it went on for nine or more seasons on HBO. I'm beginning to see why -- beyond the extreme violence there's a real story.
