PBS' Masterpiece Theater is starting a four-hour "Emma" this weekend. We'll record and check it out. You?

I'm not a huge Jane Austen fan, but that would be worth recording. Thanks for letting us know.

Ciao Ann, I understand your thoughts in above post. Many of the people on ebay ect who are selling these figs trees for high prices are FORUM members!! :) That is part of auction, it starts out low then ends up high!Some of the members have their own nursery business' and sell from there or on ebay. Alot of the members on the forums are very generous and we share or trade back and forth with each other, then there are others who charge, nothing wrong with that as it costs money,takes time and room to maintain, root and share these figs with other people. I can only speak for myself, but I have made a few very very good friends here on the forums and would never dream to sell (charge) anything to these close members. Others maybe not as close. We forge friendships and bonds and we share with each other. PErsonally, I would easily pay a large price for a fig tree that I really wanted.Especially if it was reputable and someone I know they wouldn't cheat me or lie. Also, remember, Sal's Corleone and Sal's are different figs, they are not to be tied together as one tree!!! I share my figs with others here and others who are not members of these forums for many reasons. I do charge others and strangers as face it, some of us do have business' and thats a part of business! and alot of people want everything for free, but don't want to part with anything! People that I have forge relationships with who have been more than generous will never have to pay for a fig tree from me. If I have it, they can have it! Remember that Ms. Watson was addressing the UN and speaking globally. The wage gap may be narrowing in the West, but there are precious few women in the rest of the world that have those kinds of opportunities. Also, I don't agree it's a myth, but like any statistic-driven argument, it just depends on what factors are being compared. For instance, single, childless white females probably make as much as their male counterparts in the same industry. That's a pretty small percentage, though. Try comparing working women with five children against equivalent male workers, or women of color against white men, or women in scientific fields against men in the same fields. My Lady Emma Hamilton has done reasonably well for me here. I like the color and the fragrance. Mine has never had a large number of flowers at any given time. Rather, it has had smaller numbers of flowers, but more frequently. The bush tends to grow wider than tall. It is not a large bush. Lady of Shalott is a monster that has lots of flowers all season, but they fade in the sun and do not have much of a fragrance. If you are considering Benjamin Britten, watch out. This one typically gets 10-15 ft tall in my yard. It has plenty of flowers, but they fade from vermilion to a sort of watermelon pink. I can comment on my long-term observations with my Summer Songs. They do sort of okay if we do not have a late, hard freeze. However, this past summer was the first year that any of them made a half-effort at reblooming. The flowers were small, but at least they were there. It may be like some of the other old hybrid perpetuals that had to be at least 6 or 7 years old before they would rebloom. They can be quite showy in the spring, but they are not like Crocus Rose by any stretch of the imagination.

We have Comcast Xfinity as my DH loves tennis. We pay almost three hundred. We also have Apple tv, firestick, and many others. I never watch tv until 8 at night. Then I watch a good movie, usually foreign. Because I am deaf with an implant and two hearing aids, I can only use CC as I can't understand a word when the people talk over each other so that limits my t.v. time. I'm actually ok with that as I accomplish more by myself in my studio plus doing chores. My daughter just gave me a home pod and I love it. I can turn the music up to the max and hear it yet, even then, I limit myself. Oh, and with the home pod, my 3-year old great grand Dylan and I can dance all over the place lol. It's the best feeling. We have Spectrum in Maine but we can't go yet as they closed down to out of staters.

I already set the Tivo to record it and hopefully this version will be better than the one with Gwyneth Paltrow. I think Emma is a tough character to get right, but the reviews for this one have pretty good.

Thanks for the info. I will record it. Yes, I will definitely watch it. I love the PBS period pieces. I am currently knitting helmet liners for our military in the Middle East, so it is nice to have something to watch while I keep my hands busy. Plan to con tinue knitting helmet liners through the Winter Olympics too.

I just checked the schedule and Masterpiece Classics will be showing two other Jane Austen titles:

Northanger Abbey- Feb. 14 (1 show, 90 minutes)
Persuasion - Feb. 21 (1 show, 90 minutes)

Probably. Our book club has done several of her books, but I haven't read this one, so it'll be easy to just watch it!

It's been done and done, but yes, this version does have good reviews.

Yesterday we finally finished "Cranford". I had enjoyed *reading* Elizabeth Gaskell -- and Catherine Cookson. They're of generally the same era. We've also seen dramatizations of Cookson's works on DVD. Like Austen, characters are well developed and ring as true to life today as in their period settings.

I won't miss it. I have the TIVO set up for all the Masterpiece Theater shows. I do so enjoy English actors. They always seem so well trained and they bring their roles to life.

I'm thoroughly enjoying this version. I have such a fondness for these period pieces - the wonderful costumes, the charming little villages, the magnificent homes and furnishings, the horse drawn carriages.... This one is particularly well done. Even though I've read the book several times and seen other versions it's great fun to watch the drama play out. It's also a little easier on the eyes- the costumes and hairstyles are very becoming, they appeal to the modern eye better than the authentic period ones do.

I liked it too. The actress who plays Emma is exactly right: both completely annoying and charming at the same time. Mr. Woodhouse is great, too, as is the smirking Mr. Elton. And Knightly is--well, knightly!

My favorite Persuasion is with Amanda Root and CiarÃ¡n Hinds

Would you believe we are starting a DVD of the first episodes of "The Sopranos"? Quite a contrast, eh? We must be the only people in the world who never watched this series -- it went on for nine or more seasons on HBO. I'm beginning to see why -- beyond the extreme violence there's a real story.
