Loud humming noise from vents

We have forced hot air and central air and the house was built 5 years ago. We had some additional returns added to try and cure a problem upstairs with inability to fully cool the second floor. After that was done we have found that when the AC is running, there is a loud humming noise coming from several of the vents. Any ideas of what cause this and any way to fix the problem? Thanks,

The humming noise is coming from the return vents that you added? That's odd, as I Would think adding more returns would even out the distribution of return air (reducing the CFM's passing through each vent), thus making it actually quieter. Did a professional do this work? Have you had a professional come to assess the situation? Maybe you have too much airflow to begin with--did the noise occur before the returns were added?

Maybe it's as simple as vibration on one of the ducts, can you isolate it?

No idea, I'm afraid. Does the noise bother you? Do you want them to stop making it? If that's the case, then go upstairs while the noise is happening and ask them nicely to please stop making it. Or only do it earlier in the day, or whatever solution will work for you. "I don't know what you are doing, but that noise I mentioned last week? It's happening now. Could you please figure out what is causing it and stop it? Thank you." Bear in mind that in some apartment buildings, noise travels strangely. What seems to be directly overhead might actually be on one side, or upstairs and over one unit, something like that. But if you go up while the noise is happening, you will be able to hear if it is coming from that unit or not. Or you could just live with it. Once I had upstairs neighbors who apparently dropped a bowling ball on their living room floor every night about 10 pm. Big thud of something falling, followed by a rolling noise. I never did figure out what it was, but it wasn't annoying enough to bother with trying to get it stopped.

It sounds like either the reversing valve might be stuck or the defrost control board is not telling the valve to switchover. You need to get a technician out there to look at it.

" even a gentle knock on the wall next to the fixture causes it to start and stop. " Cheap bulbs or loose fixture mounting screws. Not just the screws you may be able to see, but any screws concealed behind the fixture holding mounting brackets to the wall or the junction box behind the fixture. Try just gently pushing on the fixture between the bulbs forsing it tighter to the wall. Sometimes just touching it (even pushing on it or squeezing firmly with your hand) can dampen out the vibration. Remember the bulbs will be flesh burning hot (and any metal near them).

This just happened to me. The sound is blaringly loud and low, and it woke me up around 6am and lasted for about 10 minutes. It sounds like it's coming from the apartment above, and it's loudest in the bathroom (no windows, it's in the center of my apartment). When it shuts off it sounds like a switch is flipped and it powers down quickly. It basically permeates my entire little apartment, but the sound is also really loud by the front door so it's hard to even say where it is coming from. I thought it might be a blender or something but it's not as loud in the kitchen. It drives me insane, only happens early morning so I assume my upstairs neighbor is using something that causes it. I thought maybe a shaver?!?! But nobody's shaver is THAT loud. Everyone talks about "the hum" and electronics, but this sound is so LOUD and coming from within the building. It's not coming from the windows.

Thanks for the responses. It is coming from 2 returns. They are about 8 feet apart, one in the hallway and one in a bedroom. On both returns the fins are facing the wall that the vent is nearest to. It was put in by a professional and he stated that it could be the duct cover itself and that there is another kind that eliminates the hum. That just does not sound logical to me. But I am throwing it out there. When they added the returns, they did state that they were balancing the airflow.

I had just one return grate hum. I bought $6 "Car Door Edge Guard U Shape Edge Trim Rubber Seal" from amazon, put it on the edges to soften the contacting edges and it fixed it.

Could be a whole host of things. You need to get the "professional" back to figure it out and fix it.
