how to make shelving for kitchen?

I want to do a good amount of open shelving in my kitchen. The open shelving will house all my day-to-day dishes so it needs to be strong. I'll be spanning a space about 86 inches wide. There will be windows behind the shelves. What is the best way to get shelving that looks built in (i.e. matches my cabinets and looks seamless) and is strong? Cabinets will be Kraftmaid in Canvas most likely. Type of wood? Paint custom matched? Any suggestions on the best type of bracketing for strength and the built in look? I'm fine with mounting brackets on the window trim.
