Restore natural maple cabinets that have yellowed?
Comments (5)We had the same problem with our 8 year old cabinets. Our kitchen gets a lot of light, so they had yellowed quite a bit. We opted to refinish them, but stain them a darker color so we wouldn't have to deal with the yellowing again. The clear coat may yellow some, but the wood itself yellows with exposure to light. Staining can be tricky with maple as it tends to take stain unevenly. You can try sanding down the wood to expose the original color, but if you have any veneer, you run the risk of sanding through to the plywood underneath. This happened to some of ours and the panels had to be replaced even though the sanding was done very carefully. Painting may be your least troublesome option on this. I would consult several cabinetmakers or refinishers in your area and do some research on refinishing maple before you make a decision on what to do. We love how our cabinets turned out, but it was a lot of work. I hope you find a solution that works for you....See MoreGlaze an existing natural maple kitchen
Comments (3)There are a couple of ways to do this. Pictures would help....do they have raised panels or a place for the glaze to sit? Do you just want an all-over up-dated color? Or do you want a stain and glaze? Sight unseen, you would need to remove the varnish coat (if there is one) by washing and lightly sanding. You can simply buy a stain, brush on and wipe off. Or, you can do a series of glazes, like you see today on cabinets. And then finish with a varnish. A great place to sample some stain colors is on the inside of one of your cabinets doors. Also, you most likely will have to go with an oil-based product, but without knowing the exact finish your are looking for, can't say for sure....See MoreHow do Maple Praline or Honey Maple cabinets age?
Comments (3)i have maple cabinets (the finish was called honey maple, but i expect every maker is different) and they have definitely yellowed in the sun. good news, is that the yellow ones are on the other side of the island, where you rarely look at them as you are standing so close. i installed a solar shade for afternoons but the horse had already left the barn....See MoreStain fading cherry cabinet issue
Comments (19)I'll add me 2 cents as well & completely agree with Live_wire_oak & Debbi. Many years ago when I was an apprentice Furniture Maker I was trained to always cut out the sap wood especially with cherry. Unfortunately, this is not a practice used by many companies now. It's become the "normal & acceptable". It never catches up with the heartwood in colour and the heartwood will darken more to create even more of a colour difference. It could have all been stained "to match" when new making it less noticeable, but over time the heartwood has darkened leaving behind the noticeable sapwood. Unfortunately, your Rep is telling you the truth. As much as it pains me to agree with it....See Moreidrive65
