Comments (101)I think we made a mistake? Our 20 yr old heat pump failed in Jan. We just installed a Goodman (Amana)3.5 ton split system in our 1540sf single story home. The new ac ran all day yesterday, the first day of installation, yet the home never cooled below 75deg (outside high temp range 93-100, 10-14% humidity)? Installer said: thermostat needed to "seat in, and the core temp of home needed to cool down." AC ran all day again today, yet could never get below 74 deg (outside high temp range 97-102, same humidity). The old Rheem 2.5 ton heat pump did just as good as new unit, which comes as a surprise to me? Isn't this new unit supposed to be more efficient? I have lived in several homes in this area over the last 25 years, and none of the ac units have run constantly. My last home, 1630 sf, had a 3 ton unit, yet the ac would only cycles on for 15-20 minutes, and cycles off for 15-20 min, easily keeping 68-72 deg. If I turned the thermostat lower, the house would get colder. I don't know how low it would go, but mid 60s easily, possibly high 50s? After reading this board, it appears we have made some mistakes, like choosing a unit that has r-12, or at least I think it does? It also appears we made a mistake by not choosing the 14seer over the 13seer, so to get the better, quieter "scroll" compressor? Maybe we bought the wrong brand of equipment? We are worried now, that this supposedly more efficient unit (as compared to low seer value of the old equipment) will be too costly to run if it is necessary to run it all day to achieve a reasonable, but not great level of cooling? Comments (12)I guess adding the basement wouldn't shorten the cycle, but it would lengthen the time between cycles. A/C is set at 75, and basement is 69. Blending bsmt air with living space upstairs would cool upstairs even without any a/c on, if I didn't mind the extra humidity and radon. The only difference, as I understand it, between an air conditioner and a dehumidifier is that the heat from the a/c condenser can be separately vented if desired. An a/c's dehumidification should equal a dehumidifier's, just as an a/c cools as well as a heat pump - all the same machine, except how the plumbing and venting is arranged. The only other considerations are that if it is vented, the a/c will cool the bsmt, as well as drawing in moist outside air, both increasing RH. In other words, the dehumidifier (or a/c in unvented dehumidifier mode) achieves part of its dehumidification by heating the space, or at least by not cooling it. I think if the a/c unit can operate at temps in the 60s, it is preferred, as it has the flexibility of running in cooling mode (vented) or dehumidifier mode (unvented). I'm also thinking it might be more efficient, as EER is reported (even tho not great), while there's not much reason for dehumidifier mfr to make unit efficient....See Morecan a central AC run off a portable generator?
Comments (45)So, for the folks who are running their central AC on a small generator, there are some things to consider so you don’t damage your ac. Just because it’s working doesn’t mean it’s not harming your central ac. 1st you need to have a quick reading voltage meter your typical cheapie can’t read ms long voltage changes. What your looking for is when your ac starts what is the instantaneous voltage drop. If your seeing under 208V when starting your ac, your accelerating wear on your motor windings on the compressor. Your compressor takes a certain amount of wattage which varies depending on temperature. If your ac says 90lra at 208v you need 18,720 starting watts, to start the ac without a voltage drop. If your generator can’t supply the needed power, you’ll slow the engine down and bog the generator causing its output voltage to drop, and say it’s outputting only 185v starting the ac. That means your ac is now drawing 18720/185=101 amps, and for a longer period of time. at low voltage the ac will take longer to start, heating the motor winding on your ac significantly more, once the insulation degrade or the wiring melts in the ac your compressor is done, So it’s not that it can’t be done, but it will wear your compressor a lot more quickly. Also if your ac doesnt sound the same while running it’s because the motor is vibrating more due to a highly distorted ac wave form or high THD from the generator. This extra vibration will wear the compressor more quickly and if bad enough destroy the motor. So some things to keep in mind when running a central ac on a generator. something highly recommended for small generators is leave the ac running all the time to reduce starts which damage the motors and or install a soft start kit to reduce LRA. If the ac is noisy on generator power get a different generator with a low thd, make sure it’s grounded properly if needed and consider upgrading your ac run capacitor to a 440v. Real bottom line, a cheap generator can run a very expensive ac. But if it kills your ac you didn’t really save money by buying a cheap generator....See MoreMini split vs central heat and air
Comments (9)I have no experience with heat pumps in an area that cold. I understand that they are getting better all the time, but I don't know how they will do in your coldest weather. Cost will depend a lot on how many rooms you have. If it is an open floor plan, cost will be lower. If you have lots of walls and doors, the cost will go up as the number of units increase. Ducts are bad when they are outside of the house envelope. Design your house with indoor ducts if you go that way. Ducts are bad when returns are inadequate causing pressure differentials between rooms. This, just like leaks in outdoor ducts makes an air handler into a power vent. Mini splits are inherently zoned, but what does that get you? Zoning is not going to save you that much energy with a well-insulated house. Heat transfer between rooms will be much faster than from inside to outside. Zoning for comfort and control might be worth it. I have seven mini splits inside on three systems for nearly 5 years. I live in a hot, humid environment in a home that was retrofitted with central and had ducts in the attic and crawl space. The original central system was done right with a dropped ceiling (9 to 8 foot) in the central hallway. Later is was messed up with outdoor ducts added. The mini splits perform beautifully for humidity control. Maintenance is higher with mini splits. At minimum, you need to clean filters for each unit instead of one, two or three. I am finding that maintenance of my Mitsubishi units is greater than that. Lots of dust gets stuck in the "coils" despite regular cleaning of the filters. The back side of the coils is difficult to reach if the units are near the ceiling. In addition to that, the blower cages get dirty as well. I am trying to figure out how to get the cages out to clean them without largely dissembling the whole thing. There are some characteristics of mini splits that some to not think of. Their performance measures are hard to compare to single speed central systems. My understanding is that they are locked into a constant chosen frequency (speed) and measured like that. In real operation, at low output, variable speed systems are more efficient than at high output. This can be a factor in choosing to use set backs, which can be counterproductive. My belief is that the manufacturers could fix that by allowing a set back recovery at less than 100% output with more sophisticated controls. My mini splits run very well on portable generator power. There is no start-up surge as seen with on-off units. They spool up very smoothly and slowly. If you have more than one system, you will never be totally out of heating or cooling.
