Kitchen Photos: Soapstone, wood countertop

I've received so much amazing information on this site that I wanted to share photos of our "almost finished" project that was begun in the fall.

Our kitchen remodel included moving the stove to an exterior wall for venting, getting rid of VERY dated wallpaper, installing an island (and getting rid of the table/chairs). The footprint of the room remained the same and we kept the wood floors as well.

Materials/items:

Countertops: Spyder Soapstone

Island top: Sapele Mahogany (Craft-Art)

Cabinets: Maple shaker-style cabinets from Modern Cabinet Co.

Appliances (dishwasher, stove, refrigerator): KitchenAid

Faucet: Kohler Forte K-10433-VS in Stainless

Drawer Pulls: from Myknobs.com House of Knobs stainless (HOK-32553)

Range Hood: EuroKitchen Spagna Ventro 36" range hood

Tile: larger than average wall tiles with a bit of texture to them but don't remember who makes them

Lighting: Callisto Cocoon pendants bought at Bellacor

Counter stools/chairs: Overstock Bennett Faux Leather

Desk: Ikea

There are still a few things to do: paint walls, get desk area organized, stain trim around windows. . .

(the counter is a little lighter here because of the flash---it's actually darker in real life)

Wow! From what I can see your materials are gorgeous! I love both your counters ;) They both have such interesting veining/patterns in them.

I am in the middle of planning my kitchen. I will have both soapstone and an endgrain butcher block on one the the smaller separate counters. I did this because I know my family and they will not be able to resist the temptation to cut on the counter. Doing the butcher block will give them an area to make sandwiches and snacks .

This thread hasn't been repetitive enough yet, so I just wanted to say I LOVE and always love to revisit two of my all-time favorite kitchens, Trailrunner and Pirula. :) Susan, are you sure you don't want the floor and counter to be similar? You have your own picture in your head and it's important to end up with what pleases you, but FWIW, this is one of the ways to pull all the different materials together into a cohesive picture. If the wood counters are introducing yet another significantly different element, what are you planning for the unifying role? Will it be enough? White cabinets will offer lots of contrast and can sometimes be better dividers than unifiers.

My architect/designer sez these days Granite prices lower than nearly all the other solid surfaces and contributes to its popularity espec if u r not looking for esoteric colors. Marble, which i have alot of in our offices for multiple conf and other tables, even in a dark shade, is "delicate" in the sense that it is brittle and can crack etc, and in a lite color maintenance is brutal b/c it will stain (not an issue with, say, a dark wine color marble like we have but it does crack). I have seen some Granite Tiles used where costs need trimming and when done in larger tiles, and done well and creatively, the look is acceptable and grout lines minimal. So you may be able to compromise in one area this way...it is the long lengths of granite that set you back. Soapstone is a joy b/c of the touch, and if you like it oiled up black, stains not an issue. Natural colors of soapstone are lovely but we have only used that in dining area cabinet tops in bar-like areas...and natural is not good for kitchen. (It also is great in bathrooms, even flooring b/c it isnt slippery). But soapstone is a more old-fashioned/colonial like look...not slick and modern My favorite for counters is Stainless Steel!!! installed in 1993 i still love it. But i would then warm up the look by having the island be done in something else. Also St.Steel with dark wood cabs really look warm and approachable.

Then there is this article - that had me leaning toward quartzite ... http://usenaturalstone.org/definitive-guide-quartzite/ The Houzz article above has me leaning towards Quartz. : ) I am of the opinion that that are good features in both. Quartzite can take heat and you cannot set a hot pot on Quartz. Quartz does not stain as bad as Quartzite since Quartzite is a natural stone. Quartzite has to be sealed. I don't think Quartz does. I am thinking it is a toss up The one thing I am worried about is the part about the citrus and etching Quartz I have read a lot about. I use lemons a lot and we all cook around our island so I don't have full control of watching it all the time. . I would love to hear opinions from folks who have either. Have you had any issues with either choice?

Ooh I love your island top! And your big globe lights! And you BS tile! That looks like Porcelanosa tile. I love the texture in them!

Very pretty! I particularly love your mahogany countertop.

You have very similar layout to mine, including the angled windows at one end. Would you mind posting the dimensions of your kitchen and island with aisle clearances?

Very nice! Love the visual texture of the soapstone and mahogany counters, and the backsplash tile. And the globe lights are pure fun.

For Sharonite:

The island countertop is 77"x39" and there is 34" from the end of the island to the window sill. At the corners of the island, there is about 29 1/2" clearance which is plenty of room.

And thanks everyone. I feel like my kitchen looks so much "less grand" in the photos than a lot of the ones I see here, but the space is so much better than what we had and it's very usable and kid-friendly. Can't wait to get the desk area organized and some color on the walls.

Your kitchen is grand! And you feel exactly as I do. The photo that I would like to see is an overall photo (or two) so I can see the context of everything. I love the wood on the island.

I ended up buying the soapstone through a local granite warehouse (Boston Granite Exchange in W. Bridgewater, MA). I don't know where it came from at the time though my research leads me to Mirasol Soapstone who say they carry it "exclusively". I love that it almost has a marbling throughout it---very busy but so pretty.

Be proud of that beautiful kitchen! Your island top is really gorgeous, and those pendants are too cool! I don't think I've ever seen that kind of soapstone before. It's stunning! Enjoy it!
