Attic fan, roof fan and cooling
Comments (4)I live in a ranch house and there is currently very poor insulation in the attic. I've been told that although our a/c is sufficient, we are losing cool air thru the attic. Will adding more insulation make a difference? I think that your cool air loss thru attic is more of a hot attic air infiltration & lack of sufficient insulation. adding insulation may help, but first seal any leaks between living space & attic. once you insulate you won't ba able to access these areas from in the attic. blower door tests will help to determine where these leaks are. you can also seal ductwork with mastics not duct tapes. most homes have a lot of duct leakage. I find the air sealing and duct sealing makes a huge difference. Recessed lights are a big leakage and allow insulation and hot attic air into the house. Will replacing the attic fan (which is very onld) help or will it end up pulling more cool air from the rooms ( many of which have recessed lights)? Also, what is the function of a roof fan? attic fans pull outside air in through open windows. if you live in a high humdity area this is not a good idea. if you have allergies...not a good idea. we don't do this in my area (south La.) but I read of others in milder climates who do. so this would be climate specific and dependent upon your needs. roof vent fans...pull conditioned air from house via leakage sites and duct leakage. what type of attic ventilation do you have? The a/c runs almost constantly, but the rooms just don't seem to cool. And, it's a relatively small space 3 bedrooms and 2 baths. it may need servicing, new filter, coil cleaned, more freon...lots of things if the unit is in good shape, it may be that the house just has too much heat gain. is this a new to you house or have you been living in it for a while and this is a new situation? What is your location?? best of luck....See MoreWhole house fan vs attic fan
Comments (3)"We have no vents in place leading from the attic to the second floor" The whole house fan would go in the attic and draw air from the second floor. Our fan draws air from the hallway centrally located on the second floor but there are options for fans in each room. The installer would determine whether you need more attic venting to the outside of the house. We have a 2700 cfm whole house fan and LOVE it. When it cools down in the evening we open the windows on our 2nd floor and turn the fan on. It's amazing how fast is cools the home. Since the whole house fan vents to the attic it also turns the air over in the attic helping to cool the attic. We have been very happy with our whole house fan. There are some things to consider though. I've read comments from experts on here about fire hazards due to the suction from the fan. I believe this is primarily a concern for those with water heaters in the home. Our water heater is in our garage and so the flame is not subject to the pressure variation caused by the fan. Hopefully some experts will chime in on the things to look out for....See MoreHumming Noise in fan that goes away if I press my fan up. What..?
Comments (5)Sounds as if the fan runs 24/7. Definitely different from my usage pattern-- to each his own. And running in the living room while you are sleeping in the bedroom? My hearing is quite poor and if I heard the fan, I might rejoice for a while. After all, many things are a matter of perspective. To a worm, digging in the dirt is more relaxing than is going fishing. But guesses are all I have. Perhaps the bearings are just worn out. Perhaps the accumulation of dust on the top of the blades is uneven and has upset the balance of the assembly. Perhaps the screws holding the fan to the ceiling box have worked loose and need tightening....See MoreNoise from copper pipe in the attic
Comments (5)Hi, I just converted to gas from oil..I have a large 3 family with an old single pipe steam radiator system. The new boilers are around 82% efficient. It was installed in the summer, so I'm only now starting to work out the bugs!! The main problem I'm having is trying to eliminate the noise (water hammering) associated with a steam radiator system. I have tried all the standard remedies related to this problem. I have drained and refilled the boilers several times, keeping the water level a little above half in the sight glass. I have made sure that each and every radiator is pitched towards the valve. I have insulated all the mains in the basement with 1000 degree fiberglass steam pipe insulation. I have even changed many of the vents at the radiators. While these actions have help significantly in reducing the water hammering noise! They have not totally eliminated them! Any recommendations out there as to what more I can do to completely eliminate this problem? Thanks...... Blakk..........See Moreremodeler_matt
