Heat pump questions

We are getting quotes for heat pumps and we were wondering if the differences in hpsf are huge? For example 13 vs 15? Also is a variable speed air handler and 2 stage compressor worth the extra cost? Any information will be greatly appreciated.

Where do you live? How many months of the year do you need HVAC? And are utility bills high? In some areas, clawing every bit of heat out of the air makes sense. In others, the ROI is longer than the life of the equipment.

Would adding insulating, weather stripping and maybe storm windows be a better use of the money?

I got quotes on a gas furnace/AC combo and even if the high efficiency ones cut our energy costs in half for the heating/cooling seasons, the payback was 20-40 years. We have a short season where AC is needed, and several months on either side of that where nothing at all is needed.

A variable speed air handler might be useful ... running low to keep temps constant and running high when you need to make a bigger change.

We live in PA, the electric where we live is not terribly high. We spent $2500.00 in oil last yr so I can't imagine a heat pump being more. Our oil burner is original to our 1968 home and we refuse to replace with oil. Gas is not available.

Question 1) yes, but make sure if the furnace is an electric heat backup, Instead of gas,the humidifier is installed on the return, and not the supply, or you will be going thru alot of heat elements! 2) check stat for auto/on blower function, on means continious blower, if blower still runs in auto position after 5 min, go to furnace or air handler, and give a good rap on side of unit, blower relay could be stuck, this wil work for a while, but relay needs replaced. also on HP system there is one more position on t-stat, EMER, this means, emergency heat, it offers you to bypass heat pump mode and bring on either fossil fuel, or electric strip heat, wich Is a warmer heat than HP mode, although your unit should be equiped with an outdoor ambiant stat, which switches to your furnace when outside ambiant temp reaches approx 40 or below, setpionts vary, most companies do not Install this, due to cost!! Last, dont expect 140 degree air from your HP, the air from vent is usually 100 to 115, depending on outside temp

I'd like advice on hybrid air heat pumps. I'm in the Bay Area (San Jose CA) and thinking to add A/C using a heat pump with my existing natural gas furnace as a backup (80% efficient, 10 years old). Gas is relatively cheap here (~$1.50/therm) and electricity not so (~$0.30/kWh), but I have solar so any electricity is almost free. I'm estimating the payback period for the heat pump vs. just an A/C. Cost of a 3-ton 14.5 SEER A/C is $5500 vs. heat pump $7500. I assume I could use the heat pump almost all year round, for A/C in the summer and heat in the winter (winters are mild here with lows of 40-50 degrees). If I can save $400 in gas heating costs/year, payback is an OK 5 years. $400 is a guestimate of 100 therms/month * 4 months * $1.50/therm * heating usage 2/3 total Is there any disadvantage of heat pumps, other than the initial cost? Where is a good source of comparisons of air heat pumps? Sounds like Mitsubishi and Amana are good ones - how about brands like Bryant or Rheem? Do I need a special thermostat that will kick over to the furnace?

Hearing that the Carrier 18VS makes odd noises when going into the OFF cycle, makes me think twice about that choice because one of the reasons we were going with Carrier was for the quietness. Quietness from one brand or model to the next is typically referring to run time, while the unit is running. They will use words like "noise as low as" If a unit is 50-60 DB when running vs a slightly noiser 70-72 DB you won't notice the difference between those "when running" -- it's unnoticeable by the human ear. The difference is in start up and in some cases shut off noises. Those noises (start up / shut down) I doubt they are included in the noise level of the systems sound level as advertised. The hissing noise for this particular unit (Carrier 5 speed) --- I doubt you will find anything about it on line, except if you do a search on this board. The mfg's exist to sell you, not tell you of things you aren't going to like. That's my job, to inform you. (some on here like to roll eyes, stick noses up when I say anything here.) There was a recent noise complaint on this board about Carrier install. Mike_home exhibiting some selective amnesia. That said the hissing noises the 5 speed machine makes when cycling off aren't what I would call "loud"... but noticeable. If you place it near a bedroom window, some people are light sleepers it would be annoying. That said it's not a good idea to place any condenser near a bedroom window. It's the quote unquote rule, for those that know better. ;-) -------- The other problem that talks about repair costs and such -------- All major manufacturer's in USA in the all variable or inverter realm require their upper realm machine to be communicating or suffer a crippling of performance. These communicating attributes are things you pay for. This is one such reason the Bosch Inverter stands alone. There are no communicating requirements to operate it. Start up and shut down of Bosch is virtually silent.

Your concern is whether the intake and exhaust installation conform to the manufacturer's installation instructions. A photo number and a model no. would be helpful. You can also snap a photo and e-mail it to whatever group Innova has established for technical support in the U.S. along with your question.

What is your cost of oil/gal and cost of electric/KWH? I will run a fuel cost comparison and give you the results.

You have a ductwork system in place and have AC?

Electric service will need to be checked for capacity. It is preferred to place condenser, air handler, and backup heat strips on separate circuits.

How large is home? How is home's insulation qualities?

Here is my general spec sheet for new system.
both outside and inside units should be replaced to have a properly matched system.

15 SEER, 12.5+ EER, 9 HSPF
best matching VS air handler
full BTUs in both cooling and heating for your rated size
R-410a refrigerant(same as Puron)
scroll compressor preferred
electronic demand defrost preferred
thermostat with "dehumidify on demand" feature
staged backup heat strips
new and correctly sized refrigerant lineset
10 yr warranty on parts and compressor

you want a thorough inspection of your ductwork system. size, overall condition, supply and return lines, insulation qualities, leak test, etc.

any hot/cold spot issues in your home should be addressed.

My personal recommendation is Trane/AmStd, Rudd/Rheem, and Carrier/Bryant.

Because of your location, I would not purchase a new system that did not have electronic demand defrost.

We are definitely going with a heat pump just wondering if the extra cost of higher seer, dual stage and variable speed air handler is worth it. We just don't want to deal with oil any more. We have central air but the duct work is from 1989. Do you think it should be replaced to maximize our savings? We have ample space in our electric panel, it was checked. Our home is about 1700 sq ft. With average insulation.

Again, what is cost of oil and cost of electricity?

Do you have ductwork system in place already? If you have AC already, what size do you have?

See my spec sheet. You don't necessarily need two stage heat pump but it should be 15 SEER minimum with a var speed air handler. I would go no lower of a new system that had minimum 9 HSPF and with electronic demand defrost.

The cost of oil is $3.86 a gallon, our electric rate is $.0659 per kwh. We have ductwork but it is from 1989, the ac unit we have now is 2 1/2 ton.

You should get a load calc performed for correct sizing.

How is your home's insulation properties?

Here is the fuel comparison calculator's results.
Used 82% eff for oil, 3 COP for Heat pump.

Cost per 100,000 btu of useable heat
Electric baseboard: $1.74
Heat pump: $0.64
Oil: $3.41

You have very cheap electric rate. Suggest you recheck and make certain your rate includes all related delivery costs to your home.

Even straight electric resistance heat is about 1/2 the cost of oil heat on a BTU basis.

One caveot though, the calculator results should be used as a guide only. With that said, you should see a very nice payback over oil over a short period of time.

Stay to my spec suggestions. I personally would consider a two stage three ton system.
