I would not recommend the LG brand! We had 3 service calls in less than 2 1/2 years and are now getting a free replacement. I'm looking for a new one as well, and hope to see some good replies to your post.

If by "Kenmore HE" you mean the HE*t, the other large-drum machines in the same class are its close cousins (like the Whirlpool Duet 9400), and the Bosch NeXXt. The LG Tromm has priced itself as a first-tier machine, but historically it is half-step down. Then come the FLs from GE and Frigidaire.

Alternately, there are the small-drum European machines (Miele, Asko, Bosch Axxis,...) which have slightly less capacity and need a 240V connection, but have other advantages over the machines mentioned above and so are at least as worthy of consideration, especially if you don't need the extra capacity. (The Miele might be out of your price window.) - DR

I think that is a fine combo - will you buy the extended warranty or service plan? Just check the "out the door" price between Sears and whatever other stores you've considered (Lowe's, Home Depot, Best Buy) since Sears ext. warranty is pricey (but the coverage is different, also).

Based on my experience, I've decided that buying a FL washer from a store that services their products and offers an extended warranty is more important than which particular machine you purchase. These machines are complicated and far more prone to problems than the old top loaders.

And btw, dross, why do you see LG as a half-step down? Consumer Reports puts them on top. Just curious, not meaning to argue.

I just went to Sears today and I can get the Kenmore HE2 Plus Washer PN:47532 & HE2 Gas Dryer PN:97572 for $1707 OTD then a $65 mail-in rebate for delievery. What I'm trying to figure out now is who to get a extended warranty through.

Sorry to hear you had so many problems with your LG's. I've had mine for 3 years now and love them. I really put them through the paces too using them every day and at least 3 loads at that. I have the warranty through Best Buy and they've been great the couple times we needed to call on them (minor lint trap issues).

That said, if I had to purchase a FL set again I would be very tempted by the Bosch machines having a Bosch dishwasher and being very pleased with it.

We live in Orange County and recently got the Bosch Nexxt 500 washer and dryer from Lowe's. We are every happy.

You can get a 10% off coupon from Lowe's for moving into your new house. It's a one use coupon and I think you can apply it to a total purchase.

So, for example if you got a washer and dryer and new carpeting and ..whatever.. all on the same receipt then you can use the 10% off coupon.

LG is a relative newcomer to the FL washing machine business (1999, compared to decades for Bauknecht/Whirlpool and Bosch). From the introduction up until a year or so ago, LG *themselves* positioned their products at the tier below the leaders, and there is no evidence that the core machine is any different from their machines from a year ago. (Possibly slightly worse, because of their increasing reliance on their ultra-cheap-workforce factories in India.)

The recent up-migration of their line is probably due to pressure from below by GE and Frigidaire (who have both upscaled their washer line). Unfortunately, all LG seems to have done is add some bells-and-whistles and jack up the price an enormous amount. Myriad posts here indicate that they still suffer from some build quality and service issues.

They are still a good quality machine, and I would rather have an LG set than the GE, Frigidaire, Samsung (or Sammy-built Maytag), or even Speed Queen FLs, but on core functionality and build quality Bosch and Bauknecht still have them beat.

Just had to chime in with my two cents... based on posts and peoples experiences here, we purchased an LG combo 3-4 years ago, and I hate to say this and jinx myself but:

not ONE problem or service call at all and they get used almost every day......

Now I'm sorta curious, did we just get lucky or were these really good machines? The model numbers were/are: washer-WM0532HW and the dryer-DLG0332W.

Thanks for the feedback... Well as with anything everyone has there own experiences and recommendations. Most of our family and friends have either Whirlpool or Kenmore washer/dryers and have loved them. It's a tough call but I think we are going to go with the Kenmore from Sears.

We are making the purchase today. Sears and Best Buy are almost right next to each other so we may give the LG one more look.

Well after all of our research and limited space we have decided to stick with the Kenmore HE2 Plus washer and HE2 Dryer. These were the only washer/dryer that would fit in our limited space laundry room but yet still having HE and some bells and whistles. We are going to get the 5yr full warranty from Sears

I thought the steamwasher looked really interesting too until I found out that LG used to be Goldstar. No way I would pay over $1200.00 for an appliance made by Goldstar. And that is beside the fact that I have heard from many sources that their customer service is terrible. If the steamwasher broke, would any local service companies know how to fix it?

I am going to buy the Bosch Nexxt 500. You might like to read "Questions for Bosch Nexxt 500 Owners". Many helpful people gave me info about this washer.

Cannot go wrong with the Kenmore built buy Whirlpool machines or the Whirlpool machines. HE2t has a better suspension system along with the Duet sport ht. HE2 plus and duet sport do not...

It might be too late at this point, but I'm concerned with you looking at a 3.5 ft washer and only a 5.7 ft dryer. Isn't the usual guideline to double the capacity of the washer to fit the dryer? Sears has the 7.5 ft Whirlpool under its brand. I have the Whirlpool Gold 7.4 ft (BB $319) and it's great. It always seems to get great reviews. I had a 5.7 ft dryer before and it was too small for my large TL washer. This one fits it great.

I'd hate to see you get too small a dryer capacity. You'd regret it as I did. I didn't know any better when I bought it. I was naive enough to assume "large capacity" was some sort of standard! Oh what I have learned!!

After seeing all the comments listed on this site, I have decided to buy the Bosch Nexxt series 500. LG formerly a Goldstar? Yes, that influenced my decision not to go there. Thanks Jo. The LG is way sexy looking, but the Bosch has a better reputation of doing a great job cleaning clothes, consistently. Although the RPM is 1350 on the LG, this may be a negative as well. Excessive wear on the house and if we ever move, a 2nd floor location may be out of the question, based on the other posts.

Buy the Bosch NeXXt set - you'll be very happy!

We bought the LG set a few months ago and love them.
If we had to buy based on our experience with a Bosch dishwasher a few years ago, we'd definitely buy the LG.

Just a note, the Bosch dishwashers don't use a "food grinder" as other US made d/w use. They're not allowed to put food waste down the drain "over there". Our Bosch dishwasher was a nightmare with their "water heater". The service man didn't know what he was doing, and first replaced the control board (under warranty) and pointed out to me the "burned component". I didn't see what he was talking about (I'm an electronic technician). After he left, the dishwasher did the same thing. A few weeks later (now out of warranty) they sent a different repaiman and he had to disassemble the whole dishwasher to get to the water heater. After many calls to Bosch, they covered it, but after many other problems we got rid of it and bought a Sears (Kitchenaid model) and has been working fine ever since.

I had a minor fix to the drum on our LG dryer which we bought scratch & dent. Easy to service.

I LOVE my bosch 500 set... easy to use... my 8 YO LOVES to help me and put everything in and turn it on, take wash out and move to dryer and refill the washer... you get the idea...

It does a great job cleaning, is very quiet, clothes come our very dry form the final spin cycle... we have sink issues and usin gthe xtra rinse on every wash solves the clothes/detergent related issues we had in the past...

It's definitly built very solidly, and functionally.. maybe not quite as "pretty" as some of the other models out there... but really how many of us have our w/d out in full view of most visitors anyway???

I've had three FL machines (Whirlpool, Maytag Neputne and Bosch 500 Nexxt Plus), out of all three I believe the Bosch is the best. While I really liked the Whirlpool I had many occasions where is thumped. I don't think it's a Whirlpool issue rather a series of bad shocks from their supplier. However, I must admit the Bosch cleans so very well that is gets out stains my Whirlpool did not. The build quality is very high too and so very easy to operate. It might not be as attractive as some units out there and does not come in exotic colors, but it is a very solid machine.

I have the 500 plus W/D and it is the first unit that cleaned and dried a comforter without using the "timed dry" section to get out damp spots. I'm very impressed and so much that I like these better than my Duets. Also the Bosch W/D are made here in the US and engineered in Germany. So I don't know if that's a bonus for you or not.

When looking, I did ask about LG and while they are new comers to the market and when asking someone at HD and BB they both said that service can take a little while due to parts ordering. That was not just from one person, but two at different stores.

However, in closing, I really like my Bosch Nexxt 500 Plus W/D.

I got my Nexxt 500 Plus washer two months ago and really like it. It is quiet, does a great job and cleaning, is easy to use and very water and energy efficient. I know some people find the Bosch models ugly, but with the new chrome accents I think they are very good looking. They are in my kitchen, so the white color works out great for us. I enjoy showing them off (I actually posted a photo of my w/d in the gallery).

FWIW, I got a new Bosch DW at the same time I got the washer and I DO like the DW. To me, the DW doesn't make as much of a difference as the washer and dryer, but I do like the fact that it doesn't have the heating element or food grinder. No deformed plastic items or weird noises... IMO, the stainless steel interior also looks much nicer than the plastic ones.

I think Bosch makes great appliances. Too bad that the refrigerators and ranges seem to be a little out of my price range...
