Quiet a noisy return?

We're getting ready to replace our 21-year old system (gas furnace, separate A/C unit), and we'd also like to 'fix' a problem at the same time. Our main floor return vent is NOISY. It seems to be the volume of air, not the blower....here's our idea.

1) Line the existing return duct to reduce the noise

2) Add a 2nd return in the stairwell to make up for the lost capacity by lining the duct.

Would that likely reduce the living room noise to a more acceptable level?

Are there any grilles that are less noisy than others?

Are there any grilles that aren't as "visible"? e.g., that can be flush with the wall and not sticking out? (Since they're both in highly visible locations)?
