Normally it would take more than 5 minutes to trip the switch. It may take up to 30 minutes. If you replace the pressure switch, you will have to remove the freon, cut the line, replace the switch, vacuum and regas the system. Or you could bypass the switch. A lot of brands do not have this safety switch. Carrier sells a lot of replacement pressure switches.

You need a qualified tech to check pressures to insure you do not have a freon leak.

bob I pity your poor customers with your diagnostic skills! vshap, me thinks the unit is in what is called lockout. More then likely by blocking the airflow like you did the unit thinks its short of gas and the electronics will prevent the unit from running until a repair is made. Shut off the power to the unit at the circuit breaker, count to ten and turn it back on. This should reset the electronics. My guess is the error code will be gone and the unit will run. If it doesn't then you'll have to wait till tuesday. But don't worry, if babies didn't survive in warm weather before air conditioning was invented mankind wouldn't be here right now.

It was 90 in MD today. The 21 year-old Trane ran like a champ for 4.5 hours with indoor at 74. The new Goodman will be installed in a week or so.

Me. Havac, I tried Shut off the power to the unit but still the same error while running diagnostic. Compressor did not want to start, Just fan is running.

Did you shut down the power to the indoor unit too? For 1 minute?

Carrier LP switches often go bad. Jumper around the switch. You need to check pressures to see if the system still has adequate gas. I would expect someone to turn off power to reset ANY computer board. It ain't rocket science.

I repaired another PCB today. I replaced a diode and a resistor for a Goodman PCB. It is working for AC, but I don't have gas to test the heat. Can you repair a PCB BX? I can, and have done it in an emergency several times. I cannot begin to count the times I have removed a pressure switch form a circuit. Lennox, Rheem, Carrier all have problems. I recently found another guy that hates TRANE, and refuses to work on them. (25 yr vet) I at least will work on TRANE.

We had a guy working for us (back in the 80's) who would bypass open pressure switches and controls all the time- we called him "bypass Fred". Only thing is, he didn't bother to check WHY the control opened, as a result, we replaced a lot of units he worked on because compressors kept burning up, because of lack of freon or a motor that would quit at times. Those controls have a purpose and ignoring them or bypassing them is downright stupid.
I'm glad your friend won't work on Trane systems- it's better for everyone he doesn't. :)

code 32 for a bryant/carrier furnace is open pressure switch in the furnace controls, not condenser pressure switch.
disconnect power to your furnace then reconnect.
also, dont listen to bob about bypassing safety controls, they're there for a reason and could possibly save your life.

Well ckmb, You seem to be right on this code definition. I Googled the code and agree. Never take the customers word about anything. You will be wrong. I slipped by not checking on the code 32.

Code 32 has to do with proving the gas ignition cycle. It should not be on with the AC cycle. If it is comming on, you probably either have a wiring problem with the stat controls, a bad stat, or you have a bad PCB. Make sure that you don't have any other codes showing. I am only as good as the information I am told on this forum.

As to safety controls- I never recommend bypassing safety controls. A LP switch is not a safety switch. It is an extra useless waste of money. If the system is low on freom, it should be shut down. But this is not a safety device. If it was, all companies would be required to use them. Carrier is known for pressure switches that fail. Not because of problems with the system, but because of installation or mechanical failure of the switch. I would not recommend jumpering out any real safety switch.

In this case, my hat is off to ckmb. He told what the real code 32 means.

That's what the psi switch is for- when the owner isn't around, out of town or unaware.

Carrier had problems with their rooftop units shuting down in the early morning hours when it was cooler outside. I found the LP switch locking them out because the low psi would drop to 45 for just a few seconds. I added a time delay relay to the circuit to cure the problem. Later, Carrier came out with an additional control box to fix it- a time delay relay. I had told them about this problem when it started happening- they said I was wrong. I had to laugh that it took the engineers months to find a fix. :0

Sounds good to me, I have found similar problems with Lennox pressure switches. Never had a problem when I disabled the switch. Lennox does not have a suitable answer. I claimed the units were junk sold as quality equipment.

Carrier just seems to have bad switches? I have had several questionable system problems over a 20 year span. Am I dumb, or is the equipment designed wrong? I do not modify any OEM design or circuit. You can't have everything at all times. You have to occasionally discard the junk.

Rheem has a reset button that drives me wild. The high pressure will arbitarly blow. It does not have to be hotter or colder? I have seen several. I could study the problem for a few years, but who will pay for my time?

The ruud/rheem HP switches here open during the winter. The cause is over running in defrost. I have replaced a sensor before to correct this and in one case the system was overcharged. 2 had to be replaced.

Now you got me thinking. Almost EVERY roof top and commercial unit i've seen and worked on has a low pressure
cut out, high pressure cut out, low oil pressure cut out,
low voltage cut out, high voltage surge cut out and some have an electrical lock out for an electrically powered T.X.V. that is signaled by the stat. on a surge. HUMMM.
I just can't understand why all this useless stuff is put
there. i guess they found a box load of this stuff in a warehouse and had to put it some place. :)

You cannot compare commercial equipment installations with residential equipment. I did not comment on commercial anything, only particular brands of residential junk.

As to a 20 year span, I installed my first residential systems in 1984, then pulled my HVAC DBA in 1988, when I subcontracted services to another company. I was licensed to do HVAC in 1985 in Dallas. This is probably verifible even today. I have a York heat pump idiot card dated 1985.

I'd take commercial over residential any day.
