Considering staining cabinets
Comments (10)Thanks, cabinfo, but I'm in Nevada. It would be quite a drive! I'll look into the gel stain, steff. I'm thinking of a dark cherry colour. I have granite counters, and am going to be getting stainless appliances later this year. The cabinets are fine, but the colour looks a bit dated, so I figure going darker will be a relatively inexpensive update. I don't have the money to replace them, anyhow. Will going darker make the grain a little less prominent? When we built the house oak was still the most popular cabinet choice. Maple and cherry were just starting to become popular, and were a huge upgrade at the time....See MoreGel stain over existing finish - what top coat finish?
Comments (8)I had already bought the Minwax gel stain to try, so I did it on a piece of trim over the weekend (spare piece, not attached to cabinets). I did 2 coats, but it doesn't look very dark. Just stained. If you guys are leaving it on longer, are you just allowing that "coat" to harden enough where it won't wipe off? Does it not scratch easily? Even with the top finish? Hope the OP doesn't think of this as high jacking her thread. I've read the other threads, but still not convinced this is what DD2 needs in her home....See MoreRefinishing bedroom suit
Comments (15)I'm doing that very thing right now with oak guest room furniture and finding the Annie Sloan chalk paint to be wonderful to work with. It really doesn't need stripping or sanding before applying, it really does stick, cover, and dry fast. First coat will have you thinking "what have I done?" (not full coverage, brush strokes show at first, unattractive flat finish.) Second coat covers and smooths out great. I didn't want the on-purpose messy brush strokes as in many tutorials on using this paint so used a good Purdy brush and it smooths out beautifully with second coat. And then the wax makes it look rich and "finished.". You can play with lightly distressing parts, and if you don't like it you can throw on another coat of paint and go back to full coverage. I sound like an ad but am just someone who has been "over" my guest room furniture for a long time, but still liked the lines, and has had the AS paint for over a year and finally got around to using it. It's luverly....See MoreWindow trim - gel stain or normal stain?
Comments (4)Thank you both. The stained trim in behind is original. Would using a gel stain vs a normal stain be preferred with regard to having the least impact on the original trim?...See Morekritter_2010
