OK, first post here, the old HVAC system (GE refrig air and gas furnace) is 28 years old. I'm in Amarillo TX cooling load 1100, winter load zone III, 1750 (?).

The compressor just died so I'm looking at getting a new furnace or heat pump and new outside AC unit.

Soooo, what do I need to know? I've got a mechanical contractor coming by Monday to start giving me info and estimates, But, \fFirst thing I wonder about is whether heat pump or gas furnace is best?

Which brands are best and most reliable?

Haven't shopped for any of this stuff in years. But, I guess if it had to die, its good it did it while there is a federal rebate (30% of qualifying energy star approved products up to 1500)?

All advice, and a little ridicule for being so uninformed, welcome. ;)
