Please help me with dp needles

The pattern calls for 3 dp needles. Divide stitches on to 2 needles. Then what do I do with the third needle?? I'm sure I sound stupid, but. I can understand using a circular needle but not this.

Don't tell me to watch a video; my cranky computer is so slow I'd be sitting there for hours waiting for one picture to the other.

Any help will be appreciated!!

Usually, pattern calls for 4 dps. OK your pattern is different!
You have stitches on TWO dps so with the 3rd needle you
start knitting. When you knit, you have stitches on a
needle and you have empty needle to knit with!

Just curious, what kind of pattern is this? DP's are usually used to knit in the round, so what would you be doing with stitches on 2 needles?

I wonder if you are supposed to have the stitches on 3 DP's and the extra one is a "given" so to speak.

you are welcome ... hopefully others can define what a soil test is ... INTERIOR browning is normal .. and a lot of what your pix show.. look NORMAL ... ALL CONIFERS shed interior needles ... needles usually ONLY last 1 to 3 years ... some years worse .. based on stresses ... deep flush to undo what you did ???? NO JUST STOP AND WALK AWAY ... stop doing more... trees/conifers just dont need this much love ... the hardest thing is doing NOTHING ... keep it properly watered.. i let my conifers NEARLY dry between waterings .... its not a schedule thing.. insert finger to about 3 inches.. and do NOT water until it is dry or hot at that depth ... mulch well ... i cant see the buds in the pix .... if the buds look good ... and the last 6 inches remains green ... i would call it normal ... i await others opinions ... ken

I usually cut off about 3". You can also try using warmer water. I read something recently that suggests you use very warm water always when watering the tree as it will be taken up more easily. I was talking to the guy who has a cut your own place here. In this area at least (Dayton) the soil is alkaline and Firs like acid soils, so they aren't grown. Any fir you buy has been trucked in, and could have been cut well....as long ago as Oct! At least that's what the Mainiacs (folks from Maine ; ) ) who I knew told me. I always try to cut my own. Firs, balsam and Frasier, tend not to hold their needles as well as others. In years with drought, even cut your own may lose their needles more quickly than usual. Although it won't help you now, and you may already know it, one rule of thumb is to bend the needles in your fingers. If they are brittle, or if they pull out easily, try finding another tree as these are not as fresh as they could be.

If the machine is old enough to be non-electronic, it is definitely a keeper! I have an old Kenmore 158.121xx model, all metal levers/gears, no electronics. It does straight and zig-zag, that's it. It's a workhorse. And to think I got it from the curb on trash day! If yours is like mine, you should be able to get the covers apart to get a drop of oil on all the metal-to-metal moving parts from the bottom, and also the top. On mine, the left side next to the take-up lever hinges open to oil the needle shaft also. There's a couple sneaky plugs with a screw hiding underneath, in various places also. If I pop those out there's a screw to undo. If there's nylon/plastic gears inside, *do not* apply oil to those. If they need lube, it will be a grease-type that's safe for plastics. The wrong lube can soften the gears. If oiled & threaded properly, but it's still breaking needles, perhaps the timing is off. A local mom & pop sewing shop can give it a tune up for a reasonable price. I enjoy tinkering, so spending a few hours figuring out how to get it apart was fun for me, rather than taking it to a shop. If it's like mine, it probably beats the pants off a walmart cheapie.

I just bought a brother machine from goodwill that had the same problem. Apparently, that was the reason the previous owner abandoned the machine. Thanks to everyone for their help and input. Apparently this is a serious design flaw with Brother machines! After reading through the posts above, I was still not completely clear on the assembly of the thread guide to the needle clamp assembly. It may be because I had no previous experience with the machine, but I was able to figure it out. If it will help anyone, I'll explain how: First position the needle assembly with the black screw (needle clamp screw) to the right. The needle bar thread guide (aka squigly metal thing) has a straight section and a loop section. Insert the straight section into the bottom of the needle clamp in the small slot directly under the hex screw (the screw that is imbedded just above the black clamp screw), and push the thread guide wire up as far as it will go. The loop section will now be at the bottom of the needle clamp and creates a loop over the slot that the needle is inserted to. Now insert your needle and slide the the needle clamp assembly onto the presser bar. If it does not slide up (as mine didn't) loosen the hex screw with a hex drive (I used size 3/32). Once you are able to slide it up into position, tighten the hex screw and the black needle clamp screw. This worked for me and the machine is running great! Best of luck. I can't see using just 2 needles and knitting with the third in rounds. Unless you are knitting back and forth and then the dangling needle would be awkward.

The reason you use 3 needles and knit with the fourth is to make a triangle so the stitches aren't pulled out of shape when going round and round.

You didn't say what you were knitting, but knitting with 4 needles is used to make something that is seamless and tubular like socks or mitts or toques.

You cast on and divide the stitches on 3 needles, join into a circle and knit the first needle with the 4th. Then you knit the second needle with your now free first needle and so on. You keep going round and round. To make stockingette stitch you just knit. The patterns are written in rounds instead of rows. One round is from the first stitch you started with around to the last stitch on the third needle

I got the hang of it (thanks jjknitter)and finished the project.
The pattern was for a 4" ghost and it really did call for 3 needles, stitches divided onto 2 needles.

Now I have a question about binding off. When I finished with binding off, there is a space between the beginning and when I ended, in other words is not joined (so I just sew a couple of stitches to close it?). Is this correct or did I do something wrong.
