My first Baby Surprise Jacket

I finally found the "right" buttons and got them sewn on and pictures taken. The photos really don't do the buttons justice. They are glass with "aurora borealis" type glitter inside them. It was really fun to make and I have started another for my grandson, Exaiden. His is in black, gray, and black/gray variegated.

Congratulations! I know that you wanted to make this for a long time but kept putting it off. It is still on my off list until my knitting gets better!

Not surprised about the combination for the next one - as I recall, your daughter likes those combinations for her son.

I have a plant that looks like yours, and dang if the name doesn't fall out the back of my brain every time I haven't used it for a few days. I only ever remember it is a fairly long word that starts with a "P", and has Mona something in it. OK, dug it up: Plectranthus possibly Plectranthus 'Mona Lavender'

I have been borrowing my sister's copies of her books since Christmas. I heard of her only recently from DS. Go ahead and start the sweater from your copy of her pattern. You do have THE pattern in the book. She laments she is not a very good pattern writer, and I have to agree. Lots of online information, however, is available on her pattern too. One lists how to vary the size by using other weights of yarn and needle sizes. I am using worsted weight and size 6 circular needles for DGS who is 15 months old now. But ask here if you get stuck. Once you have made one, you will be addicted. And it is a great way to use up yarns you have not known what to do with as well as scraps too. I had a couple of varigated yarns that just did not look right in other patterns I tried, but they look great in the BSJ. And then stripes look great in this pattern, especially with a solid main color, so the scraps are disappearing too.

I have knit many, many of these. I usually just cast on the increases in that is called for in that row when I cast on the sweater's first row, and then I don't worry about the increases for that row when I get to it. (Casting on makes the sleeves wider right at the elbow, and since I like to lengthen the sleeves, it looks better.) You will be increasing 9 stitches on both of the side sections(which are the sleeves), not the back. You continue to do the decreases every other row in the same spot just like you have been doing, even with the increase of 9 stitches evenly spaced on either side. I just do the math, divide by 9 on each side of the back, and after each group, do a backwards loop increase. Then when I knit the next row, I knit into the BACK of the cast on stitch, which will make the hole that develops from the increase less obvious. Is this what you need to know?

It is really cute. I love your yarns. I am still trying to find some yarn in my stash to start one with the new needles I got for my birthday. They make a great baby or toddler jacket or sweater. I have not made the collar on any of them, but your collar looks great. Will have to try that too.

Susan, I say you should just go for it. It was actually one of the easiest things I've made in a long time. It just looks so strange that you are wondering how you are ever going to get a sweater out of this oddly shaped thing.

Sheila, I think this was a yarn by Caron that is no longer being made. Translation: it's from someone's ancient stash and I bought it at a garage sale a couple of months ago.

I wanted to make one first before beginning Exaiden's and this was the yarn I chose. I took it to church last Sunday and ended up giving it to the associate pastor's wife for their daughter Rachel. Of course, it will be several months before I get to see her in it. It's a bit warm here.

not quite the same but the yarn looks similar to Watercolor (Red Heart's Super Saver) that I used last year for a pillow. They have some bold ombre yarn that I like to use for slipper socks - currently making a pair in Mexicana (because I couldn't find Bananaberry). These would probably make nice BSJ but I still like Simply Soft for baby sweaters here in the northeast - soft and warmer than baby yarn. They have some nice bold colors if you want to buy instead of use the stash. My stash goes down a bit and then I always add more to it!

These are the small projects when I get tired of the afghans. Since I finished DIL's Michigan one, am now working on the NY Jets for my son. Birthday is in September but gift will be late........

Maybe I'll tackle the BSJ in the winter.

Donna - thanks for the crochet link. Now I don't have to try to convert it myself :-)
still working on the Jets afghan so this is still pushed off but now at least I can crochet instead of struggling with my knitting!
