Difference between Air/Air and Liquid/Air Heat pumps

Hi everybody,

I'm about to build a house in Georgia and since we don't have gas a heat pump is the perfect alternative.

I want to go with geothermal at a later point in time by attaching a heat exchanger into the freon loop onto a regular Air/Air heat pump. My goal is to be able to switch forth and back between Air/Air and Liquid/Air.

Here are my questions:

What are the differences between a regular, residential Air/Air heat pump and a Air/Liquid heat pump in a geothermal application?

Can I use such a regular heat pump system and "simply" implement a heat exchanger into the Freon loop to use water as the heat sink/heat source?

Thanks,

Dirk
