Carrier Infinity AC on Lennox 2 stage furnace/relocate to attic
Comments (3)"1.HVAC guy B tells me this is not a great idea as my Lennox furnace lacks the variable speed fan that is the key to getting the designed benefit out of the Carrier Infinity." a variable speed fan with infinity control provides better humidity control by reducing airflow to increase comfort. ````````````````````````````````````````````````````````` "2. HVAC guy B recommends that while I am replacing the system (A/C and Heat) for the upstairs area that I relocate the new unit from the basement to the attic. Guy B says this would eliminate approximately 20 linear feet of uphill ducting to get to the trunk line and improve the overall efficiency of heating and cooling upstairs." air follows the path of least resistance. if your source (furnace) is closer to your destination (your upstairs rooms) your system will perform better. 20 feet of ducting between your furnace and registers is a pretty good distance. your air will probably lose velocity by the time it reaches your upstairs. ````````````````````````````````````````````````````` "A. HVAC guy A says pumping refrig uphill causes accelerated failure of the system...yes, no maybe?" this is simply not true. if the lines are sized properly to allow for proper velocity and oil return you shouldnt have a problem. ``````````````````````````````````````````````````````````` "B. HVAC guy A and B both recommend using an 80% furnace in the attic vice a 90% furnace, which they recommend for the basement. Why not put a 90% in the attic? Is it because of the amount of water a 90% produces as a by product of combustion...and water in the attic is not a good thing?" heat rises. makes better sense if youre using a 90% and an 80% to put the higher efficiency furnace downstairs (where theres more heat loss) when some heat from the 90 is going to rise upstairs (where theres more heat gain)....See MoreCarrier Infinity 80% Gas Furnace - did I get a good price?
Comments (3)nearly 4 grand for an 80% furnace? atleast you got the fancy infinity controller. I'm assumining they linked that up with your a/c so you can control humidity. Atleast you received the nice filter's. For that kinda of money you could have gotten a 95% furnace installed with the control and new filter cabinets for probably a little cheaper. Thats just my opinion though. Ofcourse the 'bigger' shops aren't cheap. Smaller independent new companies and independent installers usualy give the best prices on installs....See MoreWhat features lost replacing a Carrier Infinity furnace w Performance?
Comments (30)Back to an earlier question, the house is about 2200 square feet. We are considering finishing about 400-800 square feet of the basement and in that case is the current 100k size of the system + Infinity zoning sized well? If I end up replacing the furnace on my own I'd need to know if I should downsize to 80k and/or if Infinity zoning vs a separate (ductless) system for the basement would be a better option. Zip code is 22015 (northern Virginia). Also, the FAD that gave the $7k quote didn't have great things to say about Carrier and suggested that due to the age of the A/C unit, if I was going to buy a new furnace we might consider starting from scratch with a Daikin system that they also carry and recommend over Carrier. Nothing is ever simple, right?...See More$7500 for Carrier 4 Ton 2-Stage Infinity 17 SEER A/C Good Price?
Comments (17)Living in NoVA, I can tell you that those electric rates are too low. I have Dominion which should be the same as yourself. The rates are broken up into two parts: Distribution and Supply. Supply is also broken down further. They also vary for winter/summer. To see the exact rates, you would need to look at the tariff. Off of my April bill, ignoring taxes and credits, $90.96 / 769 kwH = $0.118/kwh. Yes, there is a step rate above 800kwH but I think it lowers slightly. 11 cents would be fine for a cost estimate. Oh, and I paid something around $7k for a 2.5ton single stage Trane system a few years ago. Fair amount of labor removing the old indoor system, running new electrical and refrigerant lines, etc....See Morescott2006
