Help with attic fan efficiency

I'm trying to determine if my attic has enough vent openings to efficiently run an already installed attic fan. The fan I have is the following.

Looking at the specs, it appears on high speed the fan is capable of exhausting 8480 cfm?

Now, upon my research, I've found it's recommended to have 1 square foot of attic vent opening per 1,000 cfm fan capacity. And if your vents have screens on them, you need more like 2 square feet of vent opening per 1,000 cfm fan capacity.

So, in my attic, I have two louvered and screened square vents on each end measuring 14.5"x10.75". There's two screened circular vents in the roof with 9" diameters. And that's it. No gable vent or soffit vents.

According to my calculations, I should have close to 17 square feet of screened vents for an 8480 cfm fan, however, in reality, I only have almost 3 square feet.

Am I on the right track here with figuring this out? Would the builder not put in enough attic vents? The house was built in '76 and I'm pretty sure the fan is original with the house.

I started checking into this when I heard a radio handyman talk host mention it should only take 10-15 minutes of running your attic fan to cool the house. For my house, I can run the fan for a couple of hours and still not get the house cooled.

Can anyone help me figure this out?

Are you sure the radio guy wasn't talking about a whole house exhaust fan?

Well, I guess I'm getting my terminology mixed up. A whole house exhaust fan is what I'm talking about. I erroneously said attic fan.

My whole house fan, referenced above, is located in the hallway ceiling on the second floor. There's louvers in the ceiling which open when the fan is turned on.

Mine isn't variable speed so that much of a cost increase is a little scary - although it's not much more than $200 a year, and I get the advantage of moving heat or cool that's occurring naturally around the house (ie not from the furnace) I don't see why it would add the the RH% but if it does, I'm all for it, since the climate where I am is extremely dry - my humidity meter is often off the scale dry, less than 35%. I run the fan all the time, when I was a kid, my dad, an engineer did, and I find myself it does indeed even out the temperature, also, you get the benefit of added air filtration - we have a dog, plus, it draws fresh air that way (since there's the fresh air intake which joins to the cold air return) without having to open a window. I must admit when the fan is off, it's beautifully quiet. My original compromise plan was a thermostat which would cycle the fan every 15 minutes, but it didn't work properly and the one I ended up with is either on or off. My other main reason for running 100% is my stepson was living in the basement room so I was concerned there wasn't enough fresh air for him, also in summer the upstairs gets hot (no a/c yet) but the downstairs is nice and cool. Also, and I know this is unusual and 'against the rules' - I run the humidifier in the summer with no heat - since there's no a/c there is no danger of condensation - the duct walls stay pretty warm and there is no sign of mould, and it stops the summer months in here from being incredibly dry. But our case isn't that typical. In an air-conditioned place that's being dehumidified by the a/c coils, I don't know how a decent humidity level is maintained, especially in this sort of climate.

Try changing the belt first. its cheap and easy. If the noise continues then its probably the motor itself. You can remove the belt and take it to your local hardware store, they will get you the correct replacement belt. You can also try lubricating/greasing the motor and bearings if that fan has external bearings.

"We have no vents in place leading from the attic to the second floor" The whole house fan would go in the attic and draw air from the second floor. Our fan draws air from the hallway centrally located on the second floor but there are options for fans in each room. The installer would determine whether you need more attic venting to the outside of the house. We have a 2700 cfm whole house fan and LOVE it. When it cools down in the evening we open the windows on our 2nd floor and turn the fan on. It's amazing how fast is cools the home. Since the whole house fan vents to the attic it also turns the air over in the attic helping to cool the attic. We have been very happy with our whole house fan. There are some things to consider though. I've read comments from experts on here about fire hazards due to the suction from the fan. I believe this is primarily a concern for those with water heaters in the home. Our water heater is in our garage and so the flame is not subject to the pressure variation caused by the fan. Hopefully some experts will chime in on the things to look out for.

Well, here's a link with a good explanation of how ventilation plays a part... But a previous answer recommending proper insulation and possibly a radiant barrier is key. But if you already have these, better ventilation will help. My neighbor's thermostat controlled fan would run all day before he added eyebrow vents and soffit vents; now it comes on only in the late afternoon. Also, if you re-roof, a light colored shingle will help a lot, if you can stand the look. I just went from wood shake to a black asphalt and my attic is now almost degrees hotter. Attic fans can only "cool" a house to the ambient temperature outside. And they can only do that when there is enough openings from the house as well as exhaust openings in the attic. You don't appear to have enough openings for either your inlet or exhaust.

how do you get 17 sq ft of exhaust from 8000 cfm? If it is 1 sq foot per 1000 cfm would that not be 8 square feet of exhaust"? Attic fans will move air to make it seem cooler but you have to open doors and windows first then it will only cool to ambient.

It takes hours of running the fan to get the interior temp from 80 down into the low 70s when the outdoor temp is in the low 60s.

Anyways, I've been looking around the neighborhood and there's some houses identical to mine that have at least doubled the size of their attic vents (they're huge!). So they may have had the same thoughts that I'm having.

You need to open all the first floor windows when the fan is running.

Relying on infiltration is not going to be very successful.
