need help with knitting pattern

The pattern is for a baby bootee and the top and sides are knitted in one piece as follows:

Cast on 58sts on #3 needles; Work 6 rows in stst; then knit 24sts; *s1; k8; yo; turn; s1; k8, p2tog; turn**. Repeat from * to ** 7 times. Cast off the 10 sts of the middle and JOIN THE 2 SIDES BY KNITTING THE 17 STS OF THE LEFT SIDE AND THEN THE 17 STS OF THE RIGHT SIDE.

HELP!! After casting off the 10 sts I am stuck with 37sts on the left needle and 11sts on the right needle. I have tried this 4 times already and hope someone out there can help me

Did you get the pattern off the net? Doesn't make sense
to do a Yarn over then turn. Can you look at pattern and
see if you typed something wrong for us?

I replied to you under Maggie's posting before I read your own posting. So now I know what you are knitting.

I haven't actually knitted up your instructions and it's a long time since I knitted a baby's bootee so I'm relying on visualising it. And I lousy at written instuctions. But ..

What the pattern is telling you to do is to decrease stitches in the centre of the piece - this will give you a curved piece of knitting. The stitches (24 at the beginning of the instruction) at either end are for the side and sole of the bootee - the bit you are decreasing on is in the middle (the top/instep).

In many/most patterns YO in one row, which is then knitted in the subsequent row, produces a hole/eyelet. And there is usually a K.2tog. or Pass Slip Stitch Over to compensate for the increased stitch - the total number of stitches stays the same.

However, in your pattern the YO should not be knitted. I think it is an unfortunate term to use. It should be something like "yarn around".

You knit x number of stitches,
pass the yarn to the other side of the work (not over the needle) so it is in a position NOT to make a stitch,
turn,
knit x number of stitches,
repeat.

So you are decreasing by 1 stitch in every 2nd row - and not increasing at all. And, look mum, no holes!

As you decrease, and continue on the Knit 8 etc., you will gradually work your way into the side borders.

As you knit, the centre bit will start to bulge out (don't you just love my knitting instructions?)

After you have worked a few rows, you will notice that the Slip 1 and the P.2tog (which should occur over the same place in each row will form a sort of edge to the centre bit.

Just check after the 14 rows that you have 44 stitches - there should be 17 unworked stitches on the right hand side, the 10 stitches in the middle that you have been working on, and the unworked 17 stitches from the other side.

When you get to the cast off bit, the stitch you have passed the 10th cast off stitch over will be the 1st stitch of the remaining 17 (i.e. - after casting off the 10, you will have 16 remaining on the left hand needle.

I do hope this makes sense to you. My apologies if I have confused you more. I can see it - but I can't write it very well.

Have you checked out Ravelry.com?? It's a huge data base with lots of discussion boards, patterns, yarn ratings, etc. The cap you are describing sounds like a newsboy cap. If you click on patterns, then put in newsboy cap in the search box, you should come up with several. And some are free!

You use one each of two different size needles. The size of the needle basically only matters for the needle that receives the stitches. Let's say you're right handed. So, the empty needle in your right hand receives stitches from the needle in your left hand. (With me so far?) You have stitches on the left hand needle, which is a size 9. You have an empty size 35 needle in your right hand. So, when you are knitting the next row onto the right hand's size 35 needle, you will be creating a large stitch. When you get to the end of the row, you "switch needles" so that the size 35 needle with all of the stitches will be in your left hand, and the empty size 9 needle will be in your right hand. You then knit onto the smaller right hand needle. Those stitches will be smaller, because they will only be the size of that (smaller) needle. When you get to the end of this second row, you again swap the needles from right hand to left hand, and vice versa. It's the large stitch/small stitch that creates the particular lacy pattern of this scarf. HOWEVER --- you need to do this at the beginning and at the end of the scarf.... You should, of course, have a pair of each size needle. You need to use BOTH size 9 needles at the beginning. You will cast on using the size 9 and knit the first row onto the other size 9 needle. Then, you put down the empty size 9 needle and pick up one size 35 needle and knit the second row onto it. Knit the 3rd row onto the size 9 needle, etc., as I described above. Then, when you get to the desired length, you will need to be at a point where you will knit the next row (which will be the last row) onto the size 9 needle. Then use both size 9 needles again, to bind off loosely.

It didn't make sense to me too to do a Yarn over before turning, so I turned first and then did the yarn over. The pattern is from an actual flyer. Instructions are very poorly written as follows: Cast on 58 sts on needles n3, knit in stocking stitch, make 6 rows, then knit 24 sts, "1 slip st, 8 sts, 1 yarn over, turn, 1 slip st, 8 sts, 2 purl together, turn, start again at " 7 times, in total = 44 sts. Cast off the 10 sts of the middle and join the 2 sides by knitting the 17 st of the left side, and then the 17 sts of the right side. Continue by making 1 yarn over after the first 2 sts and by knitting 2 sts together before the last 2 sts, 3 times every 2 rows, to obtain 28 sts.

If you can find a hat of the same size that you want...it's a piece of cake to figure out the pattern... It's knit from the brim up on circular needles..garter stitch edge, decreasing after an inch or so to get the proper dimensions for the head....then knit straight up and decreased by the psso method every other row and finished. Trimmed with crocheted flowers. You need to figure out your gauge and measure a hat of the correct size. I made a very similar one a couple of years back.
