Another silly question (booties)

I am trying to make a pair of booties and I am having a hard time following the directions for several different ones. My problem is understanding which piece is which. For example, when it talks about the 'instep', I am not sure what part it means. When I think of instep, I think of the arched bit of your foot. Also, the directions called for doing a sc2tog, and it had an abbreviation I have not seen before which was 'YOH'. I know that YO is yarn over, but wasn't sure what YOH was. I would up with a bootie that is very long more like a boot, and had a gap where you would normally have the shoelaces or tongue of a shoe. Here is the pattern I followed:(or tried to)

INSTRUCTIONS: With MC, ch 21. Join with ss to first ch to form a ring.

1st rnd: Ch 3 (counts as first dc). Miss first ch. 1 dc in each ch around. Join with

ss to top of ch 3. 22 dc. 2nd rnd: Ch 3 (counts as first dc). Miss first dc. 1 dc in

each dc around. Join with ss to top of ch 3. Rep last rnd once more.

To form instep: 1st row: Ch 1. 1 sc in same sp as ss. 1 sc in each of next 6 dc.

Turn. 7 sc. 2nd row: Ch 1. 1 sc in each of next 7 sc. Turn. 3rd row: Ch 1.

Draw up a loop in each of next 2 sc. Yoh and draw through all 3 loops on hook -

sc2tog made. 1 sc in each sc to last 2 sc. Sc2tog. 4th and 5th rows: Ch 1. 1 sc

in each of next 5 sts. 6th row: Ch 1. Sc2tog. 1 sc in next sc. Sc2tog. Turn.

7th row: Ch 1. 1 sc in each of next 3 sts. Do not turn. Working to side of

instep, proceed as follows: Work 6 sc in left side of instep. 1 sc in each of next

15 dc. 6 sc in right side of instep. 1 sc in each of next 3 sc. Join with ss to first

sc. 30 sc. Next rnd: Ch 1. 1 sc in each sc around. Rep last rnd 3 times more,

ending with join A. Next rnd: With A, ch 1. 1 sc in each sc around. Next rnd:

Ch 1. (Sc2tog) twice. 1 sc in each of next 11 sc. (Sc2tog) twice. 1 sc in each of

next 11 sc. 26 sts. Join with ss to first st. Next rnd: Ss in next st. Ch 1. Sc2tog.

1 sc in each of next 9 sc. (Sc2tog) twice. 1 sc in each of next 9 sc. Sc2tog. 22 sts.

Join with ss to first st. Fasten off.

With RS of work facing, join A with ss to any top ch. Working between dc,

proceed as follows: 1st rnd: Ch 1. 1 sc in first sp between dc. 1 sc in each sp

around. Join with ss to first sc. 18 sc. 2nd rnd: Ch 1. *1 sc in each of next 3 sc.

Ch 3. Ss to top of last sc Â Picot made. Rep from * around. Join with ss to first sc.

Fasten off. Sew bottom seam.

The instep is the top of the foot.
YOH - Yarn over hook same as yarn over
I don't crochet that much so maybe someone else will be
able to help.

It looks like you make the toe first, then you crochet along the top 7 stitches to make the part that goes over the top of the toes, the instep. You decrease as you finish the instep. Next, you crochet down the side of the instep, picking up stitches along the ends of the rows, continue around the bottom and up the other side of the instep. Does that answer your question? Also, did you check your gauge? If your gauge is off, you can end up with the wrong size.

Hi Estreya- On March 5 Don (Jellyman) posted on dormant spray use. I'd search for that post and read it. It might be applicable to you there. I don't know what insect problems you'll have in your area, so you'll need more inforation. Others here can correct my thoughts or you can check with local sources. Is that a pear or an apple or other? It's a pretty tree but young to be carrying much fruit. I wouldn't let it set very many at all this year. Your tree is started as a central leader. Nothing wrong with that, but Don, again, posted a good argument for converting to a vase structure instead. You could search for that too. If you want to keep the central leader you should spread the branches when they are still young and flexible so that they point more out and less up, which will make them stronger (they won't be enclosing bark in their joints as they grow) and will better position the branch for fruiting and for carrying fruit. Horizontal is too level, 45 degrees is too steep. The branches in your second picture appear to me to be on the steep side; the ones in the third picture much better- but they'll likely start bending up soon. I insert clothes pins to improve the branch angle, or weight the branch further out if the branch is attatched well but arcing up. I also tie them to things (stakes, rocks, nearby fences) with soft cord, which lets you pull them gently into line with lots of control. A lot of these topics are covered here, and a little use of the search function can yield more and better information than I can give you. Of course, you'll just end up with more and better questions! I hope this helps a little. M

Threejsmom, expense is a major consideration for me, alright, and the idea of interchangeable sets is very appealing. It's good to know about the fact that Addi Naturas can catch the fine yarn. I have started over with new yarn for the baby sweater I mentioned while I was waiting for help on a specific knit Pony Blocks Baby afghan pattern. But this baby cardigan has in the round sleeves which necessitates my learning something that looks similar to making socks which also stikes my fancy (peaks my interest as many seem to really enjoy making them). Since I am a new beginner at knitting in the round, I THINK it may be more helpful for me to have more drag. By chance, did you look at the free pattern I gave the link to on the baby cardigan? I want the sleeves to turn out, so I am hoping the socks instructions will be of help to me, too. I have already purchased the Brittany 7" dnps, so must stick with them. Have you knit sleeves in the round, and do you think watching or studying sock pattern knitting on the net will be what I need to accomplish these sleeves successfully? I am feeling intimidated, but do so want to learn. Marvel

Those are cute Terriks! Stylish toe, not too pointy but just right! Some detail but not too much. The heel looks good but I cannot tell the height. WhatÃ¢ÂÂs the brand? Oh boy, it just dawned on me tonight that I did something incredible stupid when I sold the house. In order to get all my clothes and husbands clothes in the closet at sons house (we are staying here till we find a house to buy) I packed most of our colder weather clothes and put them in one of the two large storage lockers. I have no idea where they are in the storage lockers. So, now IÃ¢ÂÂm going to have buy some cardigans as wellÃ¢ÂÂ¦a new black purseÃ¢ÂÂ¦and??? ItÃ¢ÂÂs a sad time which is causing me to lose focus on some basics I need especially now that I have to buy more stuff. I always get a bit wigged on my concentration when feeling stressed. Some of you may remember me posting about my aunt with seven inoperable brain tumors. That was I think 2 years and close to six months ago. We sort of grew up together as she is only four years older. Things are not looking good. She is in the hospital now and her husband is waiting to get some direction from their main doctor. She went well past her life expectancy and up till recently kept up with her social life. She did not have much use of one side of her body ( wheelchair) but never lost her sharp mind. I just spoke to her last week and she said she was holding her own. Since then one of the tumors moved and she is going downhill pretty fast as far as pain, communication and movement goes. She can still respond a tiny bit though and seems to recognize people. ItÃ¢ÂÂs all so sad even though we have all known that there would not be a happy ending.

YOH tends to be a European abbreviation, whereas YO is the American equivalent. In European patterns, there are differences in the meanings of the terms. For example, the American dc (double crochet) is equivalent to the European tr (treble).

Your pattern is obviously American (where the sc/single crochet is used, rather than the European equivalent of dc/double crochet) but it is a point worth keeping in mind for future reference.
