Ocala on CNN this a.m.

CNN showed a picture of a snowman in someone's yard in Ocala. They had a sign in front "Greetings from Ocala". The picture was taken yesterday. I didn't see snow here, but we're 6-7 miles outside of town. But now I'm thinking what I thought was white frosty stuff on the roof lines was probably snow. It was sure cold enough.

It's 22 this morning--how is it where you are?

I mentioned allergies (I know you hadn't) because that is by and far the NUMBER ONE complaint of people who either have lived here for a number of years or who have just moved here. If they did a survey of antihistimine and steroid usage for the treatment of allergies in the USA, I am certain FL would rank #1 easily. And it seems to go on forever, every year, as things bloom, blossom and blow around in waves. When one thing finishes (pine pollen) another starts (oak pollen) and then the rains start (mold, etc) and other trees start throwing pollen out. Its not jincapacitating AFFLICTION for many folks here. My daughter and I are both affected, my husband is not. Let me see if I can put this in some sort of "realtime" perspective for you. Some of you may be able to relate to this, some probably won't. I am a distance runner for laffs grins and exercise. I have been for years, I started when we lived in California in the 1980's. My husband is a marathoner, he's originally from Dallas which is way hotter than Florida in summer. California had almost perfect outdoor exercise weather, warm not hot, dry dry dry. Until now my top distance has been the half marathon (13.1 miles). I am training for my first marathon, at the age of 48, which will be the Outer Banks in NC in early November. I am running 35-45 miles a week, outdoors (no treadmill training). On August 3rd I went out for a 16 mile training run. It was in the mid-70's when I started my run at 7:30 AM. My pre-run weight was 127 pounds. I was foolish and only took 8 oz of water with me to start because I was in a rush to beat the heat. I also forgot my Powergel. I had to stop at the grocery store at mile 13 and refill my water bottle. This was at about 9:15 AM At mile 13 1/2 I developed the early signs of heat prostration (visual disturbances, paresthesias (needles and pins, crawly sensation) in my arms and legs, buzzing fingers and hands, nausea, shortness of breath, sweat cessation followed by uncontrollable sweating). I didn't have my phone (stupid me). I was 2 1/2 miles from home and I started to walk. At about 3/4-1/2 mile from my house I couldn't walk anymore. I knew I was going to pass out. So I sat down by the side of the road and hoped someone would happen by to aid me. I was in luck and a member of the Florida Cycle Club who had been out on a 50 mile ride came by and saw I was in distress. He had an extra Sport Gel and a phone. He tried to call my husband but we couldn't get him so he called his wife. She came in an SUV with 24 oz of water and took me home. After cooling down in a cool tub and rehydration with over 64 oz of fluids, a banana, and a bagel, my weight was still only 122 lbs. Still a full FIVE POUNDS down from my pre-run weight. Which means I was probably somewhere around 115-116 lbs at the height of my distress from sweat loss, and had not had a molecule of salt left in my body. I felt terrible all that day and half the next. You may say, "Wow what a story!" but my point is...you don't have to be out running 16 miles in FL to have the same thing happen to you at any time in summer. People who work outdoors are ALWAYS in danger of heat prostration or heat stroke here...the phone guys, cable installers, roofers and other construction workers, lawn crews....the freaking Florida Gator football team at practise...those people have to work out in the heat and its dangerous. THAT'S how serious the heat issue can be here. We do have heat pumps, since our house is a little over 4000 sq ft we have 2, one for each end of the house. My electric bill for cooling is only under $200 a month in early Spring...February and March. From April through November-December it can be anywhere from $250-550 a month. Like I said, this is not the climate for someone who is looking to relocate for ANY kind of health issue unless you are planning to sit inside most of the time. I wish you luck though...if I had been lucky enough to actually get to Costa Rica, I would have NEVER in a million years come back to the US.

There are always idiots like that in these hurricanes. I haven't been watching TOO much local news because it can really get to be too much. But I was listening to a local TV station a couple of hours ago and apparently there has already been some major flooding in Galveston, Channelview, and some other low lying areas near the gulf and Galveston Bay. That was as of 6 this morning. A lot of people who THOUGHT they would ride it out were evacuating this morning. And some people were carrying stuff out of their house into their cars by wading through a couple of feet of water. You have to understand, the last major hurricane to hit Houston was in 1983. That was 25 years ago. And every time one of these storms hits the gulf, we are inundated with predictions of where it might hit for at least a week in advance. And so many times they are wrong - including this time. So, after so many "near misses" and especially after Rita 3 years ago when many evacuated and then it went east, and after Tropical Storm Eduard just about a month ago where many people evacuated, people just get immune. It's not easy to be told to evacuate over and over again and then you'd have been better off staying. It's nobody's fault, because there really is no way of REALLY knowing where it's going to hit that far in advance. But by the time it really does hit, well, it sort of becomes like the boy who cried wolf. Of course there are some who never listen as well. Anyway. It's still pretty quiet here at my house. I don't expect to see much before the wee hours of the morning. Hope Karen and Jim and Brenda check in soon!

Uh-oh, I read the posts by Sleeperblues and Moni, and now I'm back on the fence again. Okay, now I'm really curious. Maybe what I'll do is buy one and bring it as an emergency measure. I'll be with my son, so that helps. I read over the ingredients, and am familiar with many. Looked up the others, and found nothing alarming. I take no meds myself. I thought this research from the UK was interesting: Physiol Behav. 2002. Sleep Research Centre, Loughborough University, Loughborough, Leicestershire, UK. Coffee is often used as an effective countermeasure to driver sleepiness. However, the caffeine levels in coffee are variable, whereas certain proprietary "functional energy drinks" contain known levels of caffeine (and other ingredients). We investigated the effectiveness of a well-known energy drink in reducing sleepiness in drivers. Twelve healthy young adults drove an instrumented car simulator between 14:00 and 17:00 h. Their sleepiness was enhanced by sleep restriction to 5 h the night before. Following a pre-treatment 30-min drive and at the beginning of a 30-min break, participants were given double-blind 250-ml energy drink (containing sucrose, glucose, 80-mg caffeine, taurine, glucuronolactone and vitamins) vs. a control drink with the same volume and same taste but without caffeine, taurine and glucuronolactone. Two hours of continuous driving ensued. Compared with the control, the energy drink users significantly reduced sleep-related driving incidents and subjective sleepiness for the first 90 min of the drive.

17 on Long Island. But we're due for a January thaw mid-week, up to 40. I'll be glad if all the snow melts-it's looking ugly-nasty, you know, all black from car exhausts.

It was 30Âº on my carport here around 1am...near Clearwater. I've lived here for 12 years now and this is definitely the coldest I have ever seen here, since I left PA!!

It' 19 in North GA (not in the mts) at 10 am. IM with cousin in Palm Bay, FL after 10 last night he was only 2Âº warmed than we were.

It was -4 around 7 a.m., I think we're up to 0 now. Supposed to hit 20 tho today, and 40 by Wednesday. THANK GOODNESS.

It's cold! Last night's (Sat night Sun morn) low in Palm Bay, Fl was 25 degrees. I did see snow flakes in the air yesterday (23 degrees at 6:00am) but didn't settle on the ground here. It is11:00 AM Sunday morn and a beautiful sun shiney day,dry air, 32 degrees and gthe gusting wind chill making it feel like it is in the 20s. COLD This is the longest cold spell I've experienced in a long time here.

I just can't wait 'til mid-week. It looks sunny and warm outside. Warm, NOT! We just aren't equipped for the cold down here. I don't even have a winter coat! Haven't had to wear one for several years. DSis's heat went out. It's only 2 years old. They called and they guy told her it wasn't made to work under 40 degrees. We don't have furnaces much here, mainly heat pumps. And if it gets too cold the emergency heat turns on and costs about 3 times as much to heat. Some people have no heating at all in the southern part of the state.

Won't it be nice toward the end of the week when we're ALL about 20-30 degrees warmer than now? We'll have to have a KT picnic!! I'll kick off my ugly (but warm) fuzzy slippers and go barefoot ;-)

It's 12:20 and 41 in Orlando right now. Don't think it will get much warmer. Looks like it will slowly be warming up this week.

Warm today in ND, 20 ABOVE, and NO Wind. Seems almost spring No snow coming for a week or so. How are you doing Connie in your area. Yes, we still are wearing coats, hats and gloves.

I worked in MiamiFl years ago on the ninth floor and remember seeing snow out my window(never landed on the ground ) Maybe it was 1977

Right now it is 16, going down to 14 by morning; snow showers on Thursday.

We still have deep piles of yucky looking snow-stuff.

I'm ready for Spring!

I have neighbors who spend the Winters in Leesburg, FL. I know they are chillin!

minnie you have a great memory! the last time miami saw weather like we are having right now was 1977. this is completely insane that after 130+ days of summer temps over 90, which was a new record for heat, we get a new record for cold temps over a record time span. even the keys have set record lows. yesterday they went down to 48 daytime which was the coldest since the 1800's and today was a new record at 43 :-0 i'm about to upload pics to FB of icicles out on our copper rain chains from yesterday :-(

anyways it's 35 degrees at 8pm in orlando. luckily we have natural gas heat, much cheaper than electric heat plus there are plenty of power outages. lots of people w/ frozen pipes too! looks like on tuesday the crop surveys will be in, it will be very ugly for tropical plants, citrus, fruit and veggies :-( not to mention the prices for what little will be left. STAY WARM IN FL! the end is near...fri will be 74 and sat 77! ~ liz

We're in the Ocala National Forest, about 25 miles northeast of Ocala. It was mighty cold here, even for 2 Minnesota escapees...I mean, snowbirds.
