A while ago I read this entire thread. Then I switched to looking at some antique patterns on line and I couldn't resist posting this leaf shawl which unfortunately is knitted but has the effect of staggered leaves on the diagonal. Its about 2/3 the way through the pdf of the old book. http://www.antiquepatternlibrary.org/pub/PDF/BeehiveShawls.pdf I just thought it was very pretty and also interesting because the quest of this thread has been to find a pattern for a motif (fans) staggered and made on the diagonal. I'm not much of a knitter, but I wonder if they are more common in knitting? I would love to crocet leaves on the diagonal! Kathy

have the afghan pattern you sent, thank you but not what i am looking for. this was a traditional granny square, in one square, looked to be a varigated yarn but between every round, there was a white or off white row, not consistant with the granny pattern stitch, maybe a single crochet around and then the varigated started again. the white or off white row looked just about indented. hard to explain, i have looked thru my patterns and it is not hear, have internet searched also. thanks for any help.

Eureka!!! I found out the name of the stitch used - it is the Crocodile Stitch. There are some patterns for sale on Etsy under Crochet/Patterns - Bonita Patterns - and I just bought a triangle shawl pattern using this stitch. The pattern starts from the point of the triangle and works by increasing each row to make a triangle. So I should be able to make a square baby blanket by continuing with the triangle DECREASING down from the halfway point to a final point. Crocheting a square diagonally from corner to corner.
