Are there any 'instant' stripe yarns that knit vertical stripes??

Hi you know those yarns that knit up stripes instantly/magically????? Many seem they knit up horizontal stripes...... are there any that knit up vertical???????

Bernat has a new Baby Coordinates called Sweet Stripes in some fun colors. Their knit pattern website shows a diagonal stripe. I haven't tried the yarn yet (and I only crochet) but perhaps you want to give it a try. Let us know if you do.

If you are knitting or crocheting horizontal rows, there is no yarn that is consistently going to stripe vertically. As a fluke, it could happen occasionally, but any pattern is strictly random, based on how many stitches are in your rows and what type of stitches you are using. Sometimes with variegated, you get pooling instea of striping. This is when the same color shows up in the next row very close to where it was in the previous row. If you get that for several rows you end up with "blotches" of the same color. You just cannot predict how a variegated will stripe. If you want vertical rows, you most likely will have to knit or crochet the item from side to side, changing colors as you go. In other words, the hard way. And for diagonal, of course, you will have to use a pattern that starts at a corner.

I have made a scarf for just about everyone I know, using Plymouth Yarn Company's Sinsation. It's 80% Rayon, 20% wool. The yarn is made in Italy. The gauge is 3 stitches = 1 inch using US 10.5 needles. There are 38 yards to a 50 gram ball. I have always paid $14.00 to $14.50 per ball, and I use 5 balls per scarf. I've seen the yarn much cheaper on eBay, but I've always bought it in a local yarn shop because I need instant gratification - LOL! You'll see patterns showing scarves made from this that all have fringe, but no one for whom I've made a scarf has wanted fringe. And, I use size 11 needles. Cast on 20 stitches. Knit all rows (this is also called garter stitch). Cast off. Weave in all ends. This yarn is so incredibly soft and easy to work with. I LOVE knitting scarves with this. While you're knitting, the yarn is "big and fluffy." Once you're done, you can either leave it like that, or you can felt it. Put it in a top-loading washing machine (you need the agitation from a top loader with the center agitator thingy) and add a little detergent. Throw in a couple of pairs of jeans. Wash in hot water, rinse in warm water. You can run it through more than one cycle. Then, put it into the dryer (again with the jeans) and dry it on the regular (hot air)cycle. When it's dry it will be like chenille. They are so incredibly soft and feel so good against your skin. The colors that the yarn comes in are really nice, too; and a year or so ago they added some tone-on-tone colors. I guess you'd call them self-striping, but it doesn't make big, pronounced stripes. These are just about the easiest scarves you can make - it's all knitting... no purling, no "knit 2 together" stitches, no slipped stitches, etc., just knit, knit, knit, knit, knit, knit... I made four of these for Christmas gifts just this past Christmas, and all four were for relatives who had asked me to make one for them. And I've got a list of more folks who want them... Vickey, you can buy yarn bobbins for just this purpose. The difficult part is in knowing how much to cut off and wind on a bobbin to start with. If your pattern has an accurate yardage estimate, that's a good thing. There will still be some twisting if you're working with several colors, but then it's not a big deal to just lift your piece until the bobbins are all in the air and let them untwist once in a while. There are just a couple more things which may be useful-- with all due respect, actually the patterns DO expect that you will use their yarn-- that's how they make their money! But to phrase it another way-- WE, the consumer, don't expect to use their yarn, all the time (with the price of so many specialty yarns these days, we'd go broke if we did.), and patty0315's advice is exactly right, along with hidiane's-- that is, check the guage requirements and go from there. The more experience you have, the better you will be able to judge the "drape" or "hand" or a yarn and if it will work with the pattern, as they are referred to in the industry. And here's a bit of a hint as well: softer yarns are spun more loosely, and stiffer yarns are spun more tightly. Also, the dying process will affect this (ever try "Strata", a self-striping acrylic? Stiff as a board!). So try looking at the yarn they suggest on the Internet and then eye to eye at Michaels, and see if you can get a sense of comparison. The other thing is that most people I know don't use exactly the needle size suggested in the pattern or on the skein of yarn, because they knit a little more tightly or loosely than the average calculated by the company or pattern maker, and need to go bigger or smaller in their needles to make the guage. But ultimately, I like hidiane's advice, which is to wear it around the house, if necessary and call it "well loved".:-)

Plan to knit my first pair of socks. Any advice?

I warn you right now - knitting socks is addictive!! The hardest parts for novices seem to be twofold: taking the heel-turning directions on faith, and picking up gusset stitches without leaving holes. The shaping of heels (after you knit the flap) is usually done with short rows, a novelty for many knitters, but easy to do if you follow directions. Picking up the stitches is simpler if you are working with a fairly light-colored yarn and can see what you are doing. On their sock yarn "Magic Stripes" Lion Brand has a basic sock pattern which is very simple and (in my opinion) very good. As for yarns - a number of sock yarns are machine washable wool with a touch of nylon for strength. KnitPicks has some lovely colors, at reasonable prices. Google "buy sock yarn" - you will be overwhelmed! I would recommend a set of bamboo dps. Bamboo holds the stitches better than metal. Get a set of 5, not 4. And remember that this - and other - bulletin boards has access to experienced sock knitters who are eager to share their experiences and give assistance if you need it! Good luck!

This may or may not be what you are looking for but it is a good way to use up scrap yarn.
FEATHER STITCH ALFAGAN
Cast on 16 stitches. Work in garter stitch for 8 rows or 4 ridges. Slip stitch the first stitch to make a smooth edge.

Row 1: Slip stitch the first stitch. Knit 3 *YO 2 Knit 1* to last 4 stitches. YO 1 Knit 4 (32)

Row 2: Slip stitch the first stitch. Knit 3 *bring yarn on top as for purling. *Drop 1 slip stitch Purl 2 repeat from * till 4 stitches from end. Knit 4. (24)

Row 3: Slip stitch the first stitch. Knit 3 Knit 2 together, knit across until 6 stitches remain. Knit 2 together. Knit 4. (22)

Row 4: Slip stitch the first stitch. Knit 3 Knit 2 together, knit across until 6 stitches remain. Knit 2 together. Knit 4. (20)

Row 5: Slip stitch the first stitch. Knit 3 Purl 2 together, purl across until 6 stitches remain. Purl 2 together. Knit 4. (18)

Row 6: Slip stitch the first stitch. Knit 3 Knit 2 together, knit across until 6 stitches remain. Knit 2 together. Knit 4. (16)

Repeat rows 1-6 until you have 60 of pattern "feathers". Garter stitch for 8 rows or 4 ridges. Bind off or slip stitch first stitch. Bind off till last stitch and leave. Unlace first stitch on both sides of strip. When have desired number of strips laces together with a crochet hook. Beginning at bottom insert hook into first 2 loops on right side and 2 loops on left side and pull through.

You can also knit sweaters sideways so that the self-stripping yarns create a vertical pattern.
