I have tried a number of recipes and this is the absolute best. I make it at least once a week, sometimes more often. The best thing about it is, you can adjust it anyway you like, add more or subtract and substitute.
From the "Feed Me! I'm Yours" cookbook that is no longer in print:

4 cups uncooked old-fashioned oatmeal
1 1/2 cups wheat germ (I sub 1/2 cup for wheat bran)
1 cup grated coconut
1/4 c powdered milk
1 1/2 - 2 tablespoons of cinnamon(depending on your taste, I have also added nutmeg and it's just as good)
1/3 cup oil (I use olive oil, it doesn't alter the flavor)
1/2 cup honey
1 tablespoon vanilla
Options: (and here is where you can have fun!!)
1/2 cup sesame seeds (a must for me)
1/2 cup nuts, seeds or raisins (I add 1 cup chopped pecans, because I love them, and 1/2 cup sunflower seeds, but no dried fruit, I hate raisins)

In a large bowl, mix dry ingredients. In a microwave safe measuring cup, combine oil and honey and vanilla. Heat just until the honey is warm. Stir vigorously and add to dry ingredients and mix well. Spread this out onto a 9x13 rimmed baking dish and bake (depending on your time):
250* for 1 hour or
300* for 1/2 hour, stirring about half way through. When finished toasting and cool, you can add dried fruit, then store in an airtight container.
I don't add the dried fruit, I prefer to add my fruit when I put it in the bowl with my yogurt.

This is one granola my grandson absolutely loves! He says I make the best in the world! Don't know about that, but it is good, especially sprinkled on ice cream!

I love granola, and for most granolas there is a world of difference between packaged and homemade. There is one good brand at Costco though, comes in a green box.

Here's the recipe I use which was developed by Pam Anderson (author of 4 cookbooks). She has a master recipe and then 8 variations. I cut it out of USA Weekend magazine a few years ago. I like to put cranberries in mine. Haven't made it in a while though because I tend to eat too much of it.

I've never seen powdered milk in a recipe before Pawsitive. I wonder what purpose it serves in the recipe?

Since the book was written for mothers of toddlers, I assume it was a way to get more calcium into their diet. They also wrote a book called "The Taming of the C.A.N.D.Y. Monster" Continuously Advertised Nutritionally Deficient Yummies. Both of those books I used a lot when my daughter was growing up. (ps I keep my powdered milk in the freezer)

Pawsitive, I used "Feed Me I'm Yours" when my grown kids were little as well!! I still have my copy and it's tattered, stained, but sure brings back happy memories. I also used one of those hand-crank baby food grinders--bet you did too.

This is an easy one I make every week or two. Be sure to use old fashioned oats (vs. quick oats). We love making this on the weekends and the kids really love to eat it since they helped make it.

Cranberry/Almond Granola (Bon Appetit)
Nonstick vegetable oil spray
2C old-fashioned oats
1/3 C slivered almonds
1/3 C sweetened flaked coconut
1/3 C pecan halves
1/3 C frozen concentrated cranberry juice cocktail, thawed
1/3 C (packed) golden brown sugar
2 T vegetable oil
1 t ground cinnamon
1/2 t ground allspice
1 C dried sweetened cranberries

Preheat oven to 325°F. Spray heavy large rimmed baking sheet with nonstick spray. Combine oats, almonds, coconut, and pecans in large bowl. Combine cranberry juice concentrate, brown sugar, oil, cinnamon, and allspice in medium saucepan. Bring to boil, whisking until sugar dissolves. Pour hot syrup over oat mixture; stir to coat evenly. Spread mixture out on prepared sheet. Bake until golden brown at edges, about 20 minutes. Add cranberries; using metal spatula, stir to blend. Bake until granola is golden and beginning to dry, stirring occasionally, about 12 minutes longer. Cool completely on baking sheet. (Store airtight at room temperature up to 1 week.)

anyone have the calories/fat/fiber/sugars on any of these?
I rarely eat granola because of the high calorie content. at lseas the store bought ones
