mitt pattern question

When I was a kid I remember my German grandmother making mitts with 2 strands of yarn. They looked like salt and pepper when they were finished.

They looked big but were very, very, warm appparently. Does anyone have any idea what I'm talking about and where I might find a pattern?

Do you mean she knit them with two strands of yarn held together? If that is the case, any pattern wouldwork - you would just need to make sure that your gauge matched (you might need a bulky or worsted weight pattern if you were using 2 strands of sportweight , but otherwise it would be knit as directed)

Or was this a very small fair isle pattern or some other sort of color work? I haven't tried color work yet, but there are certainly lots of patterns out there.

Thanks crafttetish. I was very young but from what I can remember I am sure she did not hold the 2 yarns together. At that time I had no idea what she was doing. The cuffs and thumbs were one color but the rest, except the narrowing at the tips looked like 1 stitch of the one color and 1 stitch of the second color. She also knit the European way.

I simple quilting to keep the batting from shifting. One tip, if the mitts are for a man's hands, make the mitt pattern much larger because when it is quilted it will be smaller than you imagine.

Hello I notice most of the patterns on the web say to quilt the layers tog. I saw one that said just sew them tog.with a zigzag st and another one says optional to quilt layers. Has anyone made oven mitts WITHOUT quilting them? Without washing the fabric? Did the mitts stayed tog.? What is best to do TO QUILT OVEN MITTS OR NOT? Reasons to quilt them? Thank you B.

Go to the Sept 23 post on "Heart shaped potholder" & she has 2 listed. I kinda went by looking & my hand & made a pattern. I had cousins visiting from out of state & one wanted one for a co-worker & we didn't have time for a pattern to be shipped. My pattern worked fine. We did the lady bug & took red fabric & made the black dots with a "Sharpie" pen. I am thinking of downsizing the idea & not making a pot holder but some Christmas ornaments for the lady bug lovers in the family. I think a tree full of red lady bugs would be cute.
