Pros/cons of having water heater accessed from outside?
Comments (10)In our experience with our own house: PRO: Able to be in a better location without taking up any room on the inside. It is basically at the end of a closet running perpendicular to the house. Main part of the closet is open to a bedroom. Then there is a wall separating the end where the water heater is. It is accessible from outside. We have already had to change it out once and need to drain it again soon (sediment build up). I believe the outside location was pretty easy for this as we were able to back the truck up pretty close and didn't have to manuever it much. The new one was not that heavy, but the old one that was filled with sediment was almost more than we could handle. CONS: We don't get hard freezes here very often, but when one is forcasted, we have to turn a light on in that closet to help with frozen pipes. I don't know how much of an effect the space being unconditioned has on its efficiency during the winter. *** At my parents old house, in a bedroom addition, there was a separate water heater added. It is actually in one side of the reach in closet in a bedroom. (Electric, not gas.) We'll move into that house eventually and I dread having problems with it due to how hard it will be to access it - probably have to removed a good deal of stuff from the actual closet to get to it. Pro, though, is that it won't freeze! Their water has less sediment in it than ours does, so hopefully no need to drain it. However, before we move in, I think we might really inspect it and consider draining and refilling it just to check for sediment first. *** In my parent's new house, it is located in a dedicated hall closet. It is LP gas and has pipes running into the attic for air circulation. A drain was put in before the slab was poured and only tile is used in that area. All fixtures have been equipped with gas and electric hookups. With their plumbing/gas/electric setup, this made the most sense as far as location....See MorePros vs. Cons buying plumbing fixtures on-line?
Comments (21)We were lucky in that our plumber's prices were right in line with what I found online. However, I think there is something to be said for maintaining the goodwill of the plumber (he's not exasperated if bits and pieces are missing, or other issues due to delivery), as well as potential warrenty type issues. Aditionally, our builder uses a local guy, and in this small town I'd call him if we had plumbing issues 4, 5, 10 years down the road- he knows his work, he can fix it back up, and I I'd rather not leave a bad memory. I also find it much more effective to go park myself in a store if there is a problem rather than deal with people online (if a part happened to fail down-the-line). Now, what this may be worth is up to you, and which items are worth potentially annoying the builder and/or plumber vs. other things you may want to do differently in your build....See MoreHome Depot or Lowes--Granite. Pros/Cons?
Comments (23)Timely topic, as I'm right in middle of granite installation now w/HD. I paid back in early Feb, but had delays with new cabinets till now. HD still honored the promo pricing I had at the time of purchase ("D" level granite for "C" level price, plus free undermount sink.) I thought their price was good...I did some research and it seemed in line competitively with what others were quoting....not ridiculously low or high. Someone who works at HD once said they often negotiate really good prices from fabricators since they represent so much volume to a local shop...and if you catch them during a promo, they can offer some pretty decent values, even with their middleman markup. Not saying their price is always best, but wouldn't count them out right off the bat. They definitely let me choose slabs - in fact, they stressed that I must do so to make sure I got what I wanted. Local fabricator they subcontract to has been in business 20 years and granite yard is one of the largest in the nation. Doesn't mean my experience still may not go horribly wrong, but I feel I've covered bases as much as reasonably possible without over-obsessing any more than I already have. (And according to my husband, I'm a big time over-obsesser!) HD does have the 1 yr labor and 15-year stain-resistant guarantee. As someone here mentioned, can't say how well they'll honor guarantee if a problem arises - and I have polished black granite, so I already know I may have specific problems related to that color - but the kitchen/granite places I've checked offer no guarantee at all. So it's something. Chose slab yesterday...install should be within 8-10 days. my fingers are crossed that all goes well. (Tip: one thing I did as soon as I found out who they sub-contracted to was to Google that business's name along with "complaints" in search box, as well as check BBB to make sure there were no red flags. I think the #1 risk with HD all comes down to who they choose do to the work.) Hope this helped someone......See MorePros and Cons of Low Profile Over the Range Microwaves
Comments (30)I did end up purchasing the Kitchenaid Low Profile microwave. I originally wanted the Zephyr Typhoon 30" Stainless Steel Quiet Under-Cabinet Range Wall Hood AK2100BS. I could have done without a microwave (I never use it) but another family member uses one daily and we have limited counter space to accommodate a microwave on the counter. I like the KitchenAid Low Profile microwave very much. It is very stylish and streamlined, creating a much less bulky appearance than our former standard size OTR microwave. There is a two setting option for the lights and they are very bright. There is a four speed fan and it is somewhat noisy on the highest speed, which I expected. The fan does a fairly good job at removing smoke / odors and I can actually see the cooking smoke / fumes going upwards into the exhaust fan but I still do smell some small residual cooking odors in the home. We have outside venting. I don't do wok cooking or anything extreme so it works for my needs at this time. If I can answer any further questions regarding this item, please let me know....See MoreRelated Professionals
