They look great, but I don't think they're all that sensitive--sounds like you did everything right. The Rose Forums are a wonderful source of information, even though they can seem intimidating.

I don't have luck with mini roses in general, but I do have a few; they never thrived for me.

This year the Japanese Beetles were horrible, they've eaten everything. I had 2 tree roses, one is shot due to the JB's.

The problem is, since they come in cute little pots, generally, people think that they can be inside plants. Roses are very unhappy as inside plants. What I learned is that you can keep them inside if you wish until they start to look unhappy, then prune them way down and plant outside with a generous portion of compost and rose food. Back when I had a garden I had lots and lots of these. It's what my SO gave me for flowers. They make great border plants.

pb, what do I do with these come winter? lol. I have a south window that gets full sun in the wintertime, so I'm hoping they may do okay until next spring.

Should I plant it in the ground now so it will be there next year? Or do they survive cold winters?

We have JBeetles too, and so far they haven't eaten any of my flowers. We used to hit them with badmitten rackets. lol

Mm . . .I just asked a question on the garden forum and happened to see some of your other pics. I would guess you are a talented/knowledgeable gardener . . .not so sure it would be "easy" for someone like me!!! :)

When we lived in Olympia, WA I just planted them outside in the ground whenever they were ready (of course not the dead of winter) and they did fine. Prune them down some (not a severe pruning) and give them a little mulch if the nights are getting chilly.

Leastwise that's what I did. "Experts/pros" might give you different advice.

I had a $1 salvage mini rose last year that I just popped in the ground last summer with some bone meal, I was surprised it survived the winter (mulched over it really well).

It was getting pretty big, lots of buds, I decided to replace it with a different color mini (bought 4), white b/c I bought $2 salvage (blackspot) Cherish roses this summer and didn't want all pink. My white Parade roses are doing great, the blackspot is gone from the Cherish roses, but my mom killed the pink Kordana roses (the one from my garden and matching one I bought for her birthday) just since 4th of July. I think it was b/c she didn't water them enough, has black fabric (plastic?) covered with white stones as "mulch", just cut holes in it to plant them in so maybe they dried out, and she also planted them b/t her house and a huge hydrangea so might not have gotten enough sun. Her hydrangea is doing fine, though she also has something small planted where the new rose had been (another small hydrangea?) that looks fried. My original Kordana is still stuck in the back, brown canes except for a few small leaves at the very bottom :-(

Aj, I don't know why people put black anything around their plants, whether it be mulch or plastic. Black just increases the heat around the flowers, then they burn. I know black mulch is pretty, but it's not practical.

Anele, I am SO not a talented gardner! lol. This is my first year with new flower beds where I bought a lot of different kinds of flowers to experiment in what would grow there.

What surprises me the most is how the Caladiums have flourished in this awful heat! And they get some direct sun too. Plus, they spread and bloom all summer long, profusely.

My mom didn't want to have to weed, so she put down the black stuff (I hope it was fabric and not plastic) but then covered it with white stone, which just reflects any sun and fries the plants from underneath. I think the hydrangea is OK just b/c it's so big (5 ft tall, 5 ft wide!).

oakley - I'd say if the Kordana (pretty hardy line, I don't know what yours are) survived a CT winter with major ice storms, all just covered with bark mulch and leaves, you could do the same. In fact, plant them now with good compost and some bone meal, to let them get their roots established b4 it gets cold. I've grown cherry tomatoes in pots outside, but generally don't like anything potted b/c they dry out too quickly and get pot bound.

It will look dead in the spring, but as soon as it gets warm (ask on rose forum) cut the canes back to encourage new growth. I've never grown roses til last year, i think I cut the Kordana back around the beginning of May this year (can't plant anything til end of May b/c of frost), it had a few leaves at the base already and I was surprised. The Cherish looked totally dead, but I cut it back at the same time, didn't think I'd even see flowers this year but it came back strong and I actually had 2 flushes.

Wish I had pics of when I first planted the Parades and how tall they are now, but I don't. I may be able to dig up an old photo of the Kordana from earlier this year.

I live in Canada, zone 5 and my miniature roses stay outside all winter. They are actually hardier than most other roses.

Stop feeding them now, and plant them in the ground so they can concentrate on their roots, rather than blooms. The canes will also harden a bit in preparation for the winter.

If you want to insulate them more, put a rose collar around them in the late fall and fill it with leaves.

They should be fine.

Lovely! I bought half a dozen teeny mini roses for 2 cents each (after Mother's Day). Most died, as they were pretty bad off, but one is actually thriving. I've got it in a clay pot for now, and this fall will plant in the rose bed. It actually bloomed this summer.

I'm surprised they'd do alright outside. I always remember how a gardener (at a shop) told me that the hothouse plants (like gift-potted azaleas or hydrangea, for example) aren't good outside because they're not as hardy as those raised outdoors.

2 cents, Pesky? Wow! When in the Fall should we put them in the ground? It's hot here until mid October..usually.

Squirrel, I think a lot of it is just luck. I bought two, and one died as soon as I put it outside, this one just sat there and did nothing for a good month, then took off.
