Hey guys - so here is the FINAL set-up that I think I want to go ahead with for my home in Wichita, KS...I think the price and equipment all seem quite great....How does it look to you experts?

Any thoughts on this would be appreciated....Are the costs for equipment reasonable given the work that will be done?

Good system, fairly reasonable price. Make sure that's the most recent thermostat that has dehumidification and modulating capabilities... someone can check that model for you since I don't know. I don't think it gets you to the tax credit minimum of 13 EER/16 SEER, though (see below):

11.65 EER, 16.5 SEER, 47k btu. -- Not horrible but would like to see more for such a high end system. Harder to get with the 4 ton size.

As mentioned previously, the price is RIGHT. If you are having return air directed into both sides of your furnace, where is the spacegard filter located?

You do realize that the furnace does not qualify for energy tax credit: I don't know about that a/c - coil combo; can't find any listing for a 4 ton unit.

My light set-up is similar to those that others here have described except my shelves are white plastic. I have two shop lights hanging above each shelf, and each fixture holds 2 fluorescent bulbs. They are on chains with hooks so we can raise them and lower them as needed. This is important because plants growing too far from the lights stretch and get leggy. Leggy plants are weaker and harder to harden off to outdoor conditions than shorter, stockier plants. We put hooks in the ceiling above the uppermost shelf so we could hang two fixtures above the top shelf and raise seedlings there too. My shelves easily hold three flats per shelf but with creative placement and squeezing flats in tightly, I can get 4 flats per shelf for a total of 20 flats of seedlings on the shelves at one time. It is really easy to over-think this and to spend way too much money on some fancy and expensive lights that you don't need. That just isn't necessary. Simple shop lights with the cheapest bulbs you can buy have worked just as well for me as more expensive bulbs designed specifically for growing plants indoors under lights. I used those more expensive Grow Lights on one shelf one year and its plants didn't grow as well as the ones growing under cheaper shop light bulbs. All my light fixtures are plugged into power strips so they are easy to turn on and off. You can use a timer to turn them on and off if your schedule is erratic. I used to start seedlings in standard black flats, but several years ago I switched over to aluminum roasting pans....like turkey pans or lasagna pans. Since they are shiny metal, they reflect more light and heat onto the plants. I buy them in packages of anywhere from 12 to 20 at Sam's or CostCo. There really isn't a right or wrong way to set up your seed-starting shelf as long as you have it in an area that doesn't freeze, that has good air flow and that is easily accessible so you can pop in and check on the plants and pop back out again. You just have to figure out what works for you in whatever space you have available. If you have indoor dogs or cats who might enjoy sleeping on your seedlings, eating them, tearing them to shreds, etc., keep that in mind when you chose a place to put your shelf. My cats are totally banned from the room with the light shelf because they like to eat plants, but our large dogs (a Rottweiler mix and a Lab mix) sleep in the room with the light shelf and have for several years and they don't bother the plants at all. Be careful when putting it in a garage. Even if you think there are not any mice in your garage, you might find out you have them the hard way....when you walk into the garage one day and discover your plants have been used as Mice Chow. This is a fairly common issue for folks who start plants in a garage or some other sort of out-of-the-way area where humans spend little time in general. Starting seeds indoors is so very simple despite the fact that we humans sometimes over-think things and make it harder (and fancier and pricier) than it has to be. Just keep it simple and I think you'll be delighted with your set-up and your home-grown seedlings. Dawn

Hey mucky, Its a very good fit actually as I made the corner with the pump size in mind, in other words, I built the corner to the size of the pump, so I can access it with ease, if you go down nine post from this one you will find the post,"Pics of My terrariums after it was redone" look at the first pic, in that pic go to the seem where I glued the two tanks together, go to the middle of the seam then just a bit to the right, thats where you can (barely) see the water running down the piece of driftwood protruding out of the rear wall, it trickles down the piece of driftwood, falls into the "pond" at the bottom of the tank, is drawn by the pump (behind the false wall) through the gravel and plant roots, throught the nylon covered PVC grid built into the lower part of the false wall at the water level(you cant see it as it is covered with gravel) the water passes throught the grid, behind the false wall and into the pump that returns the water to the top of the driftwood via a hose that was put in place before the foam was sprayed, so after the foam dried all the hoses and "stuff" were hidden by the foam background, when the water reaches the top of the driftwood it trickles out onto the driftwood and starts the whole process over again, Im hopeing that the gravel and plants root system will act as a "natural filter" as I have lessened the waste load by removing the critters (one, Nishiki, actually died, Im almost pos he fell to his death) so I hope this system will work well in the long run =) I will have my kid post a pic as I tried and cant, (comp tart) but she wont be home for a bit so check back from time to time =) and remember, the false wall can be built to fit any pump, and is way better than taking you tank substrate apart to service a failing pump! =)

lavender_lass: Yes, the doorway pointed right at the table is just a small hallway to the dining room, not the front entry to the house. We did consider bumping out into the garage more but was advised against it since we'll have to put a support beam above that bump-out and the larger it is the harder (probably more $$) it is according to the contractor. I definitely hear you on the landing zone for the fridge, but we currently land on the island (2 ft away now though) and it seems very comfortable. I also proposed putting the prep sink in the exact location you suggested and was shot down by my wife and the designer. They felt that end space was needed for landing zone and shouldn't have a sink right on the end. Maybe if we had a better landing zone for the fridge it would be doable though. The right hand side of the mudroom will actually have a small broom closet with 4 18" deep cubbies to sit down on, take off shoes, hang coat up on rungs, with storage above and below. palimpsest: Very good points about focal point in the kitchen, it can really add or detract from the look, IMHO. Most people will first see our kitchen from the living room angle so they will be looking down the table/island and there is going to be a nice painted hood above the range. I think it'll be blue like the island. Likely white backsplash below with gray counters and white cabinets. I think it'll make a nice focal point and because of this I don't think I want a large light/chandelier above the table to get in the way of that view. momo7: Thanks for the vote of confidence on the colors! We did consider a peninsula at one point and I don't recall why that got shot down. We definitely prefer a table 4 of us can sit down for dinner at and look at each other over a row of seating at a peninsula, and I think the peninsula made my wife feel boxed in in the kitchen. Shallow isles might make us feel boxed in too though!

I store my food in glass but have rubbermaid plastic for sending food to my Mum & sisters. Recently, all 3 of them returned all my containers. I barely have room for everything when it’s all in stock. Pre-CV, we met at a restaurant. One sister said I have your containers in my car, don’t let me forget to give them to you. When it came time for boxing up leftovers, she went out to her car to get them, and we used those instead of the styrofoam (which triggers my recycling nephew into a rant we’ve all heard). Months later, we’re back at same restaurant and have the same waitress. When boxing up leftovers time comes, we ask can you use anything besides styrofoam? She said, wait, I remember you, you brought your own containers last time. 😆 That’s us, but it was a fluke last time, we should have prepared better this time. My SIL sends food home with my husband in old cool whip containers. I’ve never seen her serve cool whip (in 30 years) so exactly how old are the containers? For Xmas we bought her a new set of Rubbermaid plastic. He said she seemed very pleased.

Is it standard for the industry to quote 30 hours labor for a 16 hour at most job?

15 hours worth of labor were quoted, 2 men. Usually companies don't even break it down like that on the estimate.

An acknowledgment/response to those who offered help would be nice; even a simple thank you would suffice.

Questions are asked of you for a reason, and might save some disappointment in the future. Specifically, regarding the location/placement of your filter.

I apologize - my father died in November and I have been going back and forth between Wichita and Indiana to help my mother out--she has dial-up which means this forum doesn't always want to load.... I need to ask where they propose the air filtration system is going to be placed. I didn't even think about that to be honest.

I still think Rheem is better value for money than the Carrier--especially when I called Carrier's customer care line and "Natasha" told me she wasn't trained on the products and couldn't give me SEER/EER ratings for the various condenser/coil combos.

11.65 EER and 16.5 SEER seem incredibly good to me--especially when I look at various other combos like Carrier's Infinity 21 which loses ALOT when it is paired with particular coils and furnaces...

Will I be pleased with this unit overall? I like that multi-step modulating furnace of Rheem's -- 5% increments from like 40-100%! Awesome! Sounds like it will be a comfortable system!

The thermostat quoted was the newest--put in at my request thanks to this forum! Thanks everyone! :-)

Sorry for your loss. With regard to the filter, since the return is going to be divided, the filter should be placed upstream of the divide.

It is important that there be proper transitions into and out of the filter housing and radiused elbows to both sides of the furnace, if appropriate, in order to reduce turbulence and have reasonable static presssure.

The contractor should be able to give you an estimate of what your final static pressure should be, and verify it after construction.

Many manufacturers overstate their products specifications. The highest stated AFUE or SEER values are frequently limited to lower sized units in the prouct line. The specs will read, "....up to XX SEER". With respect to the Mod furnace, the highest AFUE model is the '09' @ 94.1%. The '10' comes in last at 92.4%. In the grand scheme of things, it will make little difference.
