removing carpet and underlay from stairs..yuk

Sounds like an easy job..until you find out that the rubber underlay has turned into a 1/4 inch of black tar, with approximately 200 staples to each tread. I spent an hour scraping, then using steel wool to remove the underlay.

Just finished 8 stairs today. I did a couple a day. (I'm old....:0) .ok?) If I could find that slap happy person who used the cheapest underlay and the staple gun like he was re-enacting D-Day on my stairs...it would be WW3.

Ready now for sanding, and refinishing. I'm going to use carpet treads to afford a bit of cushion.

If you have any control over a carpeting job, I would insist on the most expensive quality underlay on the stairs, at least, if you ever thought you might want to lift the carpet.

My two cents after a lot of work.
