HELP!!! My water heater keeps reseting!!!!

Three days ago my hot water heater went out. It had went out once before about a month ago and due to the huge inconvenience I decided to replace both elements (because I had it drained) and both thermostats (because I figured what the heck, might as well). I replaced everything Saturday evening and ended up having to reset the water heater Sunday morning & evening, Monday evening, and now today (Tuesday evening). I wired up the new thermostats exactly how the old ones were wired. The water heater is 4500 watts, the top element I installed is for a 4500 watt water heater, but the bottom element is for a 5500 watt water heater. This 5500 watt element was installed due to advice given to me by a Lowe's employee. He advised that using the 4500 watt element was like using a hairdryer on medium and the 5500 watt element was like using the hairdryer on high. He stated that the 5500 watt element would work in a 4500 watt water heater no problem.

My question is: is the element causing the water heater to kick off, or could one of the thermostats be bad?

Please define "went out" & "kick off". Is the water heater tripping the internal snap disc, requiring re-set, or is it tripping the breaker in the elec. distribution panel?
If the former, your thermostat is indicated. I assume you have the 'stats set at some reasonable temp., somewhere around 130F or less. The re-set trips around 150F, but of course depends on which snap disc is used, and my memory isn't quoteable.
Upping the element wattage would only decrease the time required to trip the hi temp limit if your 'stats are set too high or not functioning correctly. If the supply wiring is borderline sized, increased wattage MIGHT contribute to breaker trip, as would any direct wiring short.
The t'stats need to be in intimate contact with the tank to function correctly, no air gap, dirt, rust etc. Also bear in mind the temp. settings as indicated may not correlate with actual thermometer readings.

The manually-resettable high temperature electrical cutoff located at the upper thermostat typically operates when the temperature reaches 180 deg.

Art, Please update your life insurance policy and name me as the beneficiary. Of course I'm kidding. But I'm not kidding when I say that under no circumstances should you bypass the reset. Let me say that again, under no circumstances should you bypass the reset. The reason is obvious - if the thermostat fails, as is not uncommon with electric heaters -- you have only the relief valve preventing a catastrophe. There are always supposed to be at least two safety systems - in addition to the operational controls. You need to fix the real problem: Talk to your service person about cutting off the circ pump to the collector before the tank reaches 170 (they need to determine if it will be a problem for the collector). Alternately, see if a higher temp limit switch is available for this application. A second tank would also reduce the occurrence of this problem. I'm not sure I completely agree with faucetman... some additional information would be helpful. How big is the water heater? 40 gal, 50 gal, larger? Under what conditions does it run out of hot water? Is it when only one of you take a shower? Is it when two of you shower after each other, etc? Is it when you do laundry or some other large demand? I suspect that something else is going on - I suspect that the bottom element is burned out and shorted out - or possibly the thermostat is malfunctioning. My first guess would be the lower element. You do need to fix this problem now. The reset button is a safety device - it works when the normal operational controls fail. It is a second-line defense against catastrophic tank failure. You don't want to count on that to continue to prevent serious damage... it's kinda like the emergency brake in your car...you don't want to drive the car knowing that the regular brakes don't work and count on the emergency brake to stop you. As FaucetMan pointed out, you do have one more layer of protection, the TPR valve- that can cause flood/steam damage if it releases but at least it won't level your house like an exploding water heater can. As I said, I think you will find that the lower element is burned out - but you need to get it fixed now and stop resetting it. The link below shows what happens when a water heater lets go. Mallory, it seems that it's in everyone's best interests to keep the extra heater. You can always shut one off and you have a free backup, so long as it was free. The labor to remove it, should be motivation for the builder to leave it for you. It's got a vent sure, but it's still an atmospherically vented appliance that puts indoor air quality at risk. They really need to make those things illegal. You probably have little control in keeping your garage air separate from your house air at this point but it's something to be aware of. You could possibly do more to seal the mud sill of attached walls and be aware of the need to keep the garage-to-house door closed and keep the weather stripping fresh. For readers and posters perpetuating the myth that tankless (on-demand) water heaters save money, scientific studies have found otherwise. Heat pump water heaters are where it's at, especially in hot, humid climates or even cold climates when basements and tall crawlspaces are involved.

First off let me say that is an insane amount of water, for a residential setting. Really insane for California where there is a shortage of the resource to begin with. It is an interesting idea though. I know nothing about this kind of setup. There are only two people in my home and we get along fine with 40 Gallons of water in a tank with plenty to spare. When the kids were here though we could see issues if everyone decided they wanted to shower at the same time as we do have 3 bathrooms. If I were going to attack this idea, I would put the tankless after tank. In this way (at least in theory) the tankless would only operate at full capacity once the water in the tank was exhausted? Or as the water began to cool the tankless would ramp up. That theory based on how hot the water is flowing into the tankless and whether or not the tankless would operate at a lower setting or not at all if hot water was already flowing through it. I don't know the answer to either one of those questions. As far as those rain shower heads, not a fan. I have a family member who has one, not the best shower experience I have had. To each his/her own though.

So I shouldn't worry about the bigger element being the problem?

Should I switch out the thermostats (upper, lower, or both)?

Have you verified the actual water temperature with a reliable thermometer? If it's higher than your target 120F, then turn the 'stat down a bit. If it is not higher than 180F (thanks, bus driver) then the upper thermostat that contains the snap disc is probably faulty (the block that has the re-set button).

No. But you could do a little math and figure if the internal feed wire is suited for the increased load, which I figure probably is. But you don't see my name on the check for your homeowner's insurance either.

I'm not a fan of replacing parts 'til I find the real problem.

The thermostat (is supposed to) controls the temperature. The element wattage controls how fast the water is heated.
