The house I'm currently living in was divided into 3 flats when we bought it. The walk-in basement flat had a small entry under the steps leading up to the main level. The floor was painted wood resting on really rough concrete. Well , over time wet shoes and boots did their job and I had to replace the floor. I had my tile guy apply a coat of cement primer then some cement to level things off, then thinset and the tile. No problem! Oh and given that it's a extra entrance which is hardly used , and then only by my wife and I , we purchased the end of line tiles at a discount house for $0.99 each, marked down from $6.99. We used to have enough money, but not for everything !

Thank you so much. I really would like to do this tile but it is a pretty large room...well, one large room and two smaller rooms on either end, one of which is a laundry area. I know it could be an expensive proposition. The previous owners had vinyl in the laundry area and the rest was carpet. We've torn all that out. I just don't think carpet is a good idea because there is dampness down there. We have to (should) run a dehumidifier all the time. I was interested in the proper prep for this area cause I swear different tile guys will tell you different things. Don't know who to believe.
