Sounds good to me!!

Well it doesn't look too much different than a regular strawberry at least not in the picture in the link. I would happily eat it is it tastes good and maybe I'll pick up some seeds at the Flower Show on Thursday when I go. I hear it is fabulous!

Sure, I'd give it a try. Looks like an over ripe regular strawberry in color to me. If it is still sweet tasting like the strawberries we are used to, I think it will do well. NancyLouise

I live in a strawberry growing area....one of the top crops.
I wonder if local growers will plant some.
I would try them.

Joann - the pressure is on you to buy seeds if they are available - I can't go to the show this year, too many prior commitments.

yes I would if tastes like strawberries you bet,I count the days own till thy are in season.

The local strawberries we get are already a nice red all the way through and naturally sweet so I'm not sure how a darker color would improve them that much. The ones in the second photo are rinsed and sliced with nothing added to them.

I'm jealous - I don't think I've ever had a strawberry that looks like that, Ruthanna! Even the best looking/smelling ones I can find taste like water. Gorgeous.

What's the point? Just for looks? I've been putting early strawberries in my salads. They go great with baby lettuces, red onions and balsamic vinegar, maybe a little mild cheese. Ditto Mandarin segments.

Yea, Gina, I think it is just for looks. Like purple potatoes and some of the other odd colored veggies/fruits. But I agree with everyone, if they taste good they would be fun!

ruthanna, that's what my local strawberries look like too, I always wait eagerly for the first local ones.

I can get strawberries year round, those pale imposters that have been shipped thousands of miles. They never taste like a darned thing. (sigh)

I think maybe strawberries at their peak of ripeness are too fragile to ship effectively, so if they are out of season, we're stuck until local ones are available.

If they tasted good and were prolific and easy to grow, sure, I'd try them. I'm assuming the darker color is going to translate into more antioxidants and nutrients, that's usually true in fruits and vegetables, although not always. The statement about high antioxidant levels is somewhat ambiguous, as ripe berries are already high in antioxidants.

So, are they higher in nutrients? How much higher? That's not addressed in their "blurb".

I have a lot of members of my garden club volunteering at the Phila Flower show and I put out a BOLO on the Purple strawberry seeds. I will be going on Thursday and will look for them too! I'll let you know if I find them!

I've had tiny yellow strawberries from a local farm stand a few years ago. Made shortcake. Too weird. They tasted like strawberries but couldn't get past the yellow. Sorta like green eggs, I guess.

I've grown the blue potatoes and they were fun, and when you mashed them with butter and milk they turned a lovely lilac color. My ex-inlaws refused to eat them, they said they looked "weird", LOL, and they did, but they tasted just like any other potato.

I've grown the purple carrots, radishes that were red inside and white outside, and tomatoes in various hues of black, green, white, yellow in addition to red.

None of those bother me and I like the white "Queen Anne" type sweet cherries but yellow raspberries seemed too wrong, go figure.

I've also purchased purple cauliflower and a head that was bright yellow. purple carrots and the "colored" cauliflower touted the additional amounts of bea carotene and other nutrients, which is why I purchased/planted them. As long as they taste good, getting additional nutrients is fine by me, I tell myself. Then I come up against something like that yellow raspberry, LOL, and can't get past it. I also don't know whether, if the darker and more colorful vegetables have more nutrients, do the paler white and yellow varieties have less? I'll have to research that, just for my own benefit.

Makayla's teacher tells her that we should "eat a rainbow" every day, and I think that's good advice, so bring on the purple strawberries!

There is a fruit vendor from Jalisco, Mexico who comes down my street every Sunday, and he has wonderful ripe strawberries, as well as very good papayas, but he prices the papayas too high. I made strawberry ice cream with strawberries that I bought from him in January, and it was excellent. I also bought a papaya (despite the price) and ate half of it (with lime juice) and froze the other half in chunks so that I can make sorbet with it. I saved the seeds and threw them into my back yard to see if they would grow - that's what friends in south Texas used to do, and they got a lot of papaya trees that way.

I never eat berries on the way home from the Farmers' Market - I always have other plans for them. I would buy purple ones if they are the same price.

If boycotting Monsanto is part of your ethos, then do not buy, since Burpee is owned by Seminis, which is a seed company bought out by Monsanto. Doesn't mean they do all the things Monsanto does, they are a separate company, but they are part of Monsanto, which is a HUGE multi-national. Don't know how they were bred, GMO or not, but I'm not fastidiously against GMO, just how it is practiced, which is primarily to make soybeans resistant to Monsanto's herbicide (Roundup) or to include BT genes, which will eventually ruin BT's use as an organic pesticide (when applied rather than bred into a plant). Plus the genes may migrate to other plants through natural processes, and if you know anything about plants, is a strong possibility.

But this does not relate directly to the strawberries under discussion, unless like I said, you are an extreme anti-Monsanto person. Whether you should be against Monsanto or not is I think another discussion but I did want to bring it up as an FYI. Personally, I think it would be much more effective to boycott the soybeans and the corn rather than a company that specializes in seeds for the home gardener, such as Burpee. They have a long illustrious history in my adopted state of PA. Monsanto is a comprehensive entity, they want to make money on ALL of it, they are in the seed business BIG TIME.

As for the strawberries, I'd grow a few of them, sure, but the proof of the pudding would be in the eating and tasting. Like Annie says, grow 'em and see how it goes. This is the joy of home gardening!

Yay, BUT since they don't produce many runners, how will they multiply? At $11 a plant, I don't see how they would be practical if they don't multiply quickly.
