New Forbo marmoleum finishing question

Hi all -

Had a question for all the Forbo linoleum owners -

After this is installed, it's recommended that I put at least one coat of the "finish" on. Do addtional coats make this more "shiny"? or do they just add more durability? I like the matte look the unfinished floor has already.

I assume this can be done by hand (I have a small kitchen) - or with a sponge mop? Does anyone have any tips/tricks or issues they came up with during finishing?

Mike, since no one replied to your question I assume you found your answer elsewhere. In case you check back, I'd be interested to hear what you eventually learned. I applied two coats of finish to our marmoleum floor 3 years ago. I'd like to apply another coat now, but only if it doesn't involve stripping off the original layers first. The finish I used was by Armstrong and was an acrylic product (I believe) that went on milky and quickly dried to clear. I applied it with a pad. The marmo still looks fine after 3 years of wear, but I see some surface scraches that I am sure would disappear with another coat of finish.

Spudish -- I am on team Lino Love for all the reasons you mentioned. We did Armstrong's sheet lino (check under their commercial lines) in the kitchen in '03 and Forbo sheet in the main bathroom in '08. No regrets at all! The concerns about people thinking lino is vinyl is worth considering if resale is a concern. Personally I hoped the "eco" thing would mitigate that but was willing to take the risk. Your bath sounds like it's going to be an interesting mix and lino is so good at fitting in with many moods. Good luck and keep us posted! ps I always recommend people check with commercial flooring places because one can save quite a bit on material by using remnants from large jobs -- a plus when going with pro installers as we did!

Oooooh, lucky you! Mr Vix and I did put a [Forbo] sealer on though I do adore it natural. [And Forbo has a factory finish.] I'd prefer 1 coat but we have 2 because I don't care THAT much and Mr Vix does the work. Two gives it a light sheen in certain lights, but it'd take a lot more coats and/or a buffer to get it like a commercial shine. We use the Forbo cleaner/stripper when it's time to reapply the sealer...for us that seems to be once every 12-18 months. Otherwise is usually sweeping or vacuuming or mopping with just water. Dirt doesn't get ground in the way I've experienced with my lower-end vinyl. Post pics when you're ready!

It is straight forward sheet flooring installation. The seams are not difficult, although the technique is different from the trace and cut method. Seams are underscribed first with an underscriber tool to mark and then cut with a hook blade knife that follows the underscribed mark. Forbo has some installation info on their website that describes how it's done. No other issues really. You have to provide the required substrate and use the recommended adhesive and roll the flooring with a linoleum roller. I'm in New York State, so I can't be of any help directly. Perhaps Forbo can recommend an installer nearby Lynchburg.
