Finishing red oak

Just a few curiosity questions. My unfinished red oak floors will be finished in a couple weeks...

1) The installer told me not to wait too long... is that because he wants his $ or is there a real reason not to wait too long to stain and urethane them?

2) How much wood gets removed during the sanding? 1/8" More? Less?

3) I had my baseboards installed but left the show molding off until after the floors are finished... and my painter is waiting until after the floor is finished to paint the baseboards... I figured they would be scuffed and messed up by the floor finishing if done before. When the floor is sanded, do they sand it consistently right up to the baseboard? Is there any case where they leave a ridge or dip where my shoe molding will not sit right against the floor and baseboard?

4) The installer told me that if I want to test some stain colors against my cabinets I can stain a little floor and put some urethane on it to get a realistic view... will this completely come out with sanding? I though stain penetrated into the wood a little?

Thanks for your advice.
