Different carpet in master bedroom OK?

I'm building a new house... all downstairs and stairtreads are hardwood, upstairs will be carpet. I want to do the master in a different carpet than the hall/landing and three kids rooms. The master would be a frieze and the others a cut loop type, both in a neutral color. My builder says it's a no-no to have 2 different type carpets come together but the carpet lady says no problem. I just wanted the master to have a cozier carpet and something flatter for the kids to play on. Is this really a bad idea??

There is nothing wrong with having a different carpet in the master. As long as the colours don't clash, it is fine.

from a resale point of view, having the same is preferred. Since its new and its your house who cares?. By the time you go to sell you will most likely recarpet anyway. Design wise its usually best to use the same but there isn't any 'rule'. Do what you like and enjoy.

Also, something that I do, I paint the sample on plain white paper, either printer or thicker paper and tape it on different walls of the room, each wall will pick up a different tone depending on lighting. This is the best way to see how color will look instead of putting up the tiny swatches or brushing on one small section.

At the end of the day, you have to be happy in your home, and choose accordingly. However, if you are concerned about resale value, it is more common to have carpet in the bedrooms. That being said, what kind of tile do you have? Does it look like stone? wood? I myself have hard surfaces throughout my home with no broadloom. If you could provide pics of the tile and carpet, it would really help us to comment appropriately.

I am also always drawn to this inspiration pic of jute/sisal look with light gray walls too, but my husband likes gray as he thinks it won’t show as much dirt and wear....

When we bought this spec house we were still able to pick the carpets upstairs. Our real estate agent said the same thing: that we should use just one carpet upstairs.

We didn't listen to her and so the bedrooms all have different carpets--really different carpets. Our children got to choose what they wanted and we got a really comfortable carpet that we also used in our guest room. We're very happy with it. And when and if we sell, we'll worry about it then.

It would probably look better if you did the upstairs hallway in wood as well, so you wouldn't have the jarring effect of two different types of carpet touching. But like boxers said, do what you like.

We live in a 13 year old colonial that has carpeted stairs, hallway and th 4 rooms upstairs. It's a typical straight centerhall colonial. We moved in a year ago and slowly updating it and possibly relocating in 3 years.

It's a tough deciusion for us to update as we go because now we are redecoration the empty room for our 2 year old to make room for the new baby. We thought of putting in wood floors in her new room, BUT that would really mean we need to do the whole upstairs in the future. THen I thought of just putting in new carpet, but do I really want mismatched carpet? I think it would not look great in the long run for future sale.

Another thought I had was replacing it with carpet using something we would want in all the rooms eventually and then making the hallway wood and having the stairs redon in wood.

Does that seem more like the way to go?

I think it will look fine, especially if it's a similar/complementary colour, and if your master is a good size.

There is absolutely no need to have the same carpet throughout the house . The bedroom should have a look on it's own and not conform to the hallway.
