i just ordered the Mohawk smartstrand. There's much more about in in the flooring forum, if you're interested. We went with one of the carpet companies in Dalton, GA, and their price on it was unbelievable compared to Home Depot. They all have different names, and you have to do some detective work to figure out which HD ones are the equivalent to the carpet/flooring store ones. The internet stores from Dalton are quite helpful. I went with Owen Carpet, which has been bought by a larger place. My parents actually went down there just to check it out, and said it was fine, just like all the other places in Dalton. Shipping was about the same as tax for me, but the pricing difference per sq yard was approx. 30%. Basically you figure out how much you need, and which colors you want, and they then call Mohawk, and find out how much Mohawk has in stock of that carpet in that color. You can either wait for *your* color, or if you aren't too choosy and are pressed for time, then give them several colors, and they will figure out which one will ship the soonest. if you need a roll vs getting a 'cut' piece, then the price goes down, since they don't have to cut it. It usually comes in 12 ft length rolls, and are different lengths, since other people have had pieces 'cut' from the roll. I didn't go with the carpet padding that would increase the Mohawk warranty, but just went with their generic 9lb pad with a moisture barrier, and it was also much less expensive than HD, at under $3/sq yd. Now, if only my contractor would actually get it installed, so I can see it!!

Thanks for the comments everyone. Finally got to speak to the landlord. Home Depot is coming to install the new carpet on Thursday. He refuses to pay them $100 to remove the old carpet, so the options he gave us are that he'll come remove it Monday and leave us without a bedroom floor for three days, or we have to somehow find time to do it on Wednesday, when my husband works and I'm in class. "Unless you want to pay them to do it." These all feel like pretty unacceptable options to me, considering this carpet was in bad enough shape that it should have been replaced before we moved in three years ago. Really not sure what to do at this point.

Okay - late to the party. I want hardwood floor in every room in my house except the bathrooms, where I prefer tile. I do have antique wool oriental rugs in all rooms. But if I could afford it, I would have some wonderful Stark wool carpet in my bedroom. Since the room is 24'x24', that is out of the question. Yes, I DO have allergies and asthma. My daughter has hardwood floor through out all the rooms in her house, but in the MBR, she has carpet over hardwood. She prefers a carpeted bedroom, not area rugs. Yes, she has cats and a son with allergies. Many decades ago, I had an allergist in St Louis who aid that unless a child is ending up in the hospital, there was no reason to get rid of carpet, draperies, upholstered furniture, stuffed animals, and family pets - the recommendation of most allergists for households where a child has allergies. He said that allergies are so complex, that just getting rid of a couple of things will not change things much. He said the only way to totally avoid allergens would be to live like "The Boy in the Bubble", and that wasn't recommended for serious emotional reasons. When we moved to LA, I started calling allergists, explaining that I had 5 cats and 2 dogs and no intention of getting rid of any of them. Finally found a terrific one who totally agreed with the St Louis allergist. When we moved to KY, I did the same - found one who agreed with them. He retired and I now have yet another allergist. He, too, agrees. Another thing I liked about all these allergists was that they were not selling ANYTHING other than their medical services! Most allergist's offices want to see you special filters, air purifiers, special bedding - you name it - they have a very expensive product just for you. This is especially true in pediatric allergist's office. Don't like that at ALL! Allergies are very complex. When I go somewhere without my dog (now only 1 dog), my asthma is no different than when I'm home sleeping with the dog. Allergies are very complex. If one is already having hardwood put down, put it down EVERYWHERE. If you prefer carpet in a bedroom, put it down over the hardwood. Do it for resale if nothing else.

The contractor doing it is a friend and both sales employees at prosource flooring have all said it can't be matched so I haven't really looked into finding the same wood. We bought the house when it was a year old so I don't know the name of the wood and there are no extra pieces in the garage where they keep old paint/tiles/etc. I was also told by our friend that the floors underneath will likely not be ready for hardwood since they went cheap on the carpet in the first place. At this point I'm ready to just get it done and I'm looking for a click in/no glue floor that won't take a ton of time or expense. Just wondering if anyone has done a stone look flooring in a bedroom and if so how did they like it. This is some samples of what the sales woman at prosource was thinking
