Oh I simply loathe spiders. I don't even mind snakes, used to have a pet python. But spiders... eeeewww and ick! I would have smashed the thing, sprayed it with Raid and then sucked it up in the vacuum cleaner. I would pick a vacuum cleaner (since I have about 30) where everything goes through the fan so it would be chopped up. THEN, I would jump on the bag and throw it in the dumpster "just in case" And then feel guilty for killing a "beautiful" and beneficial part of the web of life "hadn't done a thing to me". Better it than me though. I am surprised you didn't think it was a dog or cat brushing against you and think nothing of it! There is an aftermarket diaphragm that is available that uses a much more sturdy ( wear resistant ) type of rubber. Once I switched to that style I had much longer longevity between replacements.... and yes debris is the biggest culprit. I have crushed shell in flower beds that makes it's way into the pool and it will cut right through the standard diaphragm.

I ask because my father, who was an air conditioning engineer, installed a large electrostatic cleaner in the AC system he had installed in our Chicago house in the mid '50s.
