I feel your pain. I was there once and finally had to just take a leap of faith. I settled on Pool Rover, though it is for above ground pools and I suspect yours is an in-ground pool. I would, however go with a robotic cleaner. The filter doesn't need to be running while you are vacuuming, you won't have to replace the sand or silicone in your filter as often and the way they operate adds another level of filtration. Yes, you have to clean them out and to extend their life you shouldn't leave them in the pool all the time, but it is SO worth it. Mine has been a life-saver. Take it from someone who was her own "pool-boy" for two years. I LOVE it! Here is a link that might be useful: 10 Best Robotic Pool Cleaners from Swim University

There is an aftermarket diaphragm that is available that uses a much more sturdy ( wear resistant ) type of rubber. Once I switched to that style I had much longer longevity between replacements.... and yes debris is the biggest culprit. I have crushed shell in flower beds that makes it's way into the pool and it will cut right through the standard diaphragm.

We've always been out of money at the end of construction projects and just do it ourselves. Not rocket surgery. Anyone who knows how to push a broom should be able to handle it (NB -- it's amazing how many people have no idea how to use a broom! It can be painfully comical to watch as the dirt is endlessly redistributed rather than collected up.)
