help! re-routing cold-air-return by ourselves

Hi,

Help needed for re-routing cold-air return in our basement.

We are planning to add 2nd bathroom in our unfinished basement, and there is a cold-air return duct to furnace right above the future bathroom area. We would like to move(re-route) it about 1 1/2 - 2 feet to the future hallway, so we can get more space in our shower space. (some pictures below)

We would like to re-route the duct by ourselves if possible.

Q1) We are thinking about getting a couple of "fan" shape sheet metal to re-route them. Is there anything we should prepare/concern before we start it?

We have never done it by ourselves, and local heating comapny charges way too much than our budget. We are hoping it won't be too hard to do it by ourselves... Any advises will be appreciated!

Q2) The cold-air return duct from furnace is about 21'' wide 7'' tall, and it goes thru one of our bedroom in our basement, then go up to the main floor. The duct width goes down to 15'' (still 7'' tall) right before it goes in to the basement bedroom.

Do you have any idea why they installed that way? If we re-route them, would that be ok to replace all the duct to 15''x7'' instead of 21''x7'' at the same time ? That way, we will have a little more room above hallway as well. But not sure it worth to spend time&money to do so, or does it screw up some engineering behind it.

Thanks!
