Should I Switch these outlets?

My furnace intake pipe froze New Year's Eve and I awakened to a cold house. What a start to the year!
Upon inspection I found the intake is 15" above the exhaust and thus draws in the moist exhaust gases. As pictured, the tall pipe is the intake and the short downward-facing pipe is the exhaust. Since I'm new to this condo unit, I suspect someone in the past removed these and switched them upon replacement. Can anyone confirm this is likely the case?

If so, I need to swap, but the short exhaust elbow is cemented to the 3" pipe. Any suggestion on how to remove without damaging the pipe? The current intake is just pushed on.

I believe you are correct on all you are saying. I don't know of a way to seperate pvc once it has been glued. I have seen pvc joints stick well enough to carry water pressure for months before disjointing. Unless you can see primer or glue,pull and twist while tapping with a short 2x4 board to see if the joint will move. If the pipes are accessible on other side of wall and there is room,maybe cut the pipes , switch sides and reconnect with female couplers.

How did you determine that those wires where hot? Have you opened up the light/fan to see how that is wired up?

Assuming you want to keep the switched outlet separate from the fan and light operation, you need another switch. If you want the outlet to be on the same switch as the fan light then you can proceed with two switches. "1b, 1w, 1r, 1g going to the outlet". Is this a 3-way outlet? That is, is there another switch elsewhere that controls the outlet?

There were three sheathed cables (each containing conductors) feeding into the ceiling junction box. I was game to try it, but the electrician called and could squeeze me in between jobs. I took him up on it and consider it money well-spent. The original wiring (1964) was really brittle. He put a junction box in the attic, and installed a new ceiling box with just 3 conductors into it. He also installed the brace. After his work was complete, installing the ceiling fan was a snap. I think I could have done it with patience and consultation from you guys. At the very least, I'd have known if I got in over my head -- I'm sure it would have been pointed out by someone here, too. I enjoy a challenge, but am grateful to have gotten a professional installation. Thanks for all of the great information you share on this board!

"There is always a hot wire going to the switch and in the switch box." Gee - you may want that to 'always' be the case - but it is definitely NOT always the case. What is ALWAYS the case - is that a regular light switch (not a three way, four way, etc.) is always in Series with the light. Yes, it would be good, to have the HOT controled by the switch... but for example, years ago - I got zapped by a light - because the Hot was gong to the lamp, neutral to the switch... and I was an idiot and hadn't killed the power at the breaker... Anyway - in a bathroom which has its only outlet on the lamp - it seems a good bet to me - that we are probably dealing with knob & tube wiring... I have seen some wierd electrical in my days... so I try not to assume. But adding a GFCI outlet; is definitely something the average person can do - after some careful reading.
