Positioning of Wall Heater in Garage?

Ok, need you experts to settle a debate:

We're in the process of hanging a wall heater in the garage: only source of heat in that room. We're in N. IL, so we're talking cold winters.

One school of thought says put the heater in the very front of the garage, right next to the large external garage door, to create a "heat shield" between the heat sink in the room (the garage door) and the rest of the room.

Other theory is that the heater should go as far away from the external door as possible (ie. near the house) so the heat has to flow through the entire room before exiting through the uninsulated garage door.

A related question is, where's the most efficient place in the house to locate furnace heating vents? Right under doors / windows, or away from them?

Thanks much for any responses. Any external reference links would be great too!
