Does anyone hand piece anymore?
Comments (17)I usually have one hand-piecing project going. I'm down to the final two rows of my hand-pieced GFG, so this week I cut out and started another hand-piecing project (see a block of this in my thread "Anyone know the name of this block?"). I plan to hand-piece the seams around the center red square, then machine-piece those small blocks together 4 to a block. I machine-piece all my other quilts, though. I love hand-work, but my machine gets a workout, too. I mainly hand-quilt most of my quilts, but lately, in an effort to finish up more, I am machine-quilting straight lines with my walking foot - in the ditch, or diagonal lines across blocks, and yes, I have machine-quilted and hand-quilted both on the same quilt. I do the machine-quilting first - usually it's in the middle of the quilt, and the hand-quilting is in the outer borders where I can put a nice feathery or flowery design. There are no rules!...See MoreVinyl Tile or Sheet - Does it matter
Comments (18)We installed the Cryntel Italia Travertine vinyl tile - a buck a square foot at Lowes - in our old kitchen and upstairs bath, about 300sf total, and it looks amazing. (, which was taken in progress and so the room is a mess, ) Doesn't really look anything like travertine, but it's a pleasantly neutral variegated beige/tan. HD's Trafficmaster is a comparable product. The reaction has been extremely positive and it is downright bizarre how many people think it's porcelain until they touch it or are told it's vinyl. (Uh, no grout lines, folks. Pay attention.) It's a 1994 tract-style Cape, a little under 2000sf but very modest - a starter for the folks trying to cram a couple of kids and all their junk into a typical apartment - but a VERY long way from an "800 sq foot entry home in a run down neighborhood"! It is still very much a "Formica and vinyl" house though, putting granite and ceramic, for example, in it would be downright laughable. We DIYed - note we are not "weekend warrior" accomplished DIYers - and it was a hard few days of work, but it looks amazing. We would not have been able to DIY a sheet installation and when I think about what a crappy, cheap-looking sheet vinyl I would have been able to get for under $2 a square foot installed, I just laugh. Good quality sheet vinyl can get surprisingly pricey, I discovered it can be almost comparable to having an inexpensive ceramic tile installed! I do suppose though, if you have fairly small areas to do, it might save you a chunk of money to investigate the local flooring stores (not HD or Lowes) for sheet-vinyl remnants and hire your own installer. Just stay away from the flimsy, high-gloss vinyl tiles. Go for the thicker, nearly-rigid, semi-matte tiles instead, they just look less chintzy. One reason why vinyl tiles can come up is installing them over existing sheet vinyl or vinyl tiles - you can get a problem called "plasticizer migration" that interferes with the adhesive bond. But if you're doing it specifically for selling and don't really care about the long-term durability factor, just slap 'em on over whatever. We tore up the old sheet vinyl (it was torn, curling and coming away from the floor anyway) and even though the tile was peel-and-stick we used a modified adhesive method (described in this thread in the flooring forum) to ease the installation process and produce a better end result because we believed in doing things right and not screwing whoever bought the place the way our PO did (perhaps inadvertently, who knows)....See MoreCurtain Lengths - does anyone do a shorter length anymore?
Comments (19)I purchased my first home a few months ago and bought 94 inch curtains and liked them. I hung them, then bought more 94 inch curtains for the dining room. Months later I read that curtains should hang to the floor. :( So I should have gotten 108 inch curtains I guess. Since I spent a few hundred dollars in curtains- these are here to stay. Comments (20)I don't know how thick the specs say, but I had a few planks of each as samples and they stacked right up beside eachother the same thickness, at least the ones I had. Oh, and this was the self-adhesive floating Allure I know they have an interlocking version that is thicker, come to think of it. I did that floor install all in 4 days of working about 14 hours a day, and I did treat myself to a massage afterwards! I was very sore from all the bending and my hands were bruised on the palms from pressing on the knife. I didn't think I was pressing hard but do it hundreds of times a day and you get pain! My hands actually became very swollen and I had to ice them. But, I minimized the time between our closing date and the time we could move in - we were renting a temporary furnished apartment between the sale of our previous condo and the move in to the new one... so I wanted to complete carpet removal, paint everything and install new floors in 10 days, and I did! So we saved a lot of money on additional rent as well as installation costs.. But I never want to do that again! I'd recommend going at a more reasonable pace :)...See Moremjsee
